Met Éireann announces storm names for the coming year

Ever wanted a storm named after you? Met Éireann has announced the new storm names for winter 2019-20

With winter fast approaching, Met Éireann has announced the new storm names for the coming year.

The names, which are in alphabetical order, were chosen in association with the UK Met Office and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. What’s more, for the fifth year in a row, forecasters sought input from the public.

‘Name Our Storms’

Speaking about the ‘Name Our Storms’ campaign, Met Éireann’s Evelyn Cusack said it had been an “undoubted success in raising awareness of the threat and impact of severe weather”.

Thousands of suggestions were sent in by the public, with many people requesting their own name be given to upcoming storms. Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland radio programme, Evelyn Cusack also added that children were hugely involved in suggesting names; with many sending her storm drawings.

After much deliberation, meteorologists settled on the final 21 (the alphabetical list of storm names skips the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z to comply with international storm-naming conventions).

Some of the popular Irish names on the list include Brendan, Ciara, Francis, Liam, Maura and Roisín. Evelyn Cusack said ‘Brendan’ seemed to be in honour of the late comedian, Brendan Grace.

And so, without further ado, these are the storm names for winter 2019-2020.

    There’s always hope.
