Met Éireann extends countrywide snow and ice warning

Wrap up and take care if you’re going on the roads, as snow, ice and severe frost is expected in many parts of the country until Sunday afternoon.

Met Éireann has extended its countrywide weather warning until midday on Sunday.

An updated status yellow alert, warns of frost and ice on untreated surfaces on Saturday morning, with some snow showers expected in northern and northwestern areas during the day.

“Continuing very cold. Severe frost and ice on untreated surfaces this morning and returning tonight to Midland and eastern areas,” the national forecaster said in an updated weather report.

“It is expected to be dry early tonight with sharp to severe frost developing and temperatures falling to between zero and -3 degrees. The rain will fall as sleet in places with snow over hills – especially in the north.”

It is to get slightly warmer on Sunday. Rain with freshening southwest winds will get into the west before spreading east to all areas later tonight bringing a rise in temperatures tomorrow,” they added. “Temperatures will be milder at 5 to 9 degrees.”

Monday is to be cool and bright with sunny spells and scattered rain or hail showers, mostly in the southwest west and northwest. The morning will bring some blustery winds.

Drive with care

AA Roadwatch has also urged drivers to take extra care and to drive with extreme caution in hazardous conditions.

“Extra caution is needed on the roads in many parts of the country that are affected by snow. Frost and ice are likely on secondary routes and on high ground in particular. Remember, it takes up to ten times longer to stop on an icy road. In affected areas, slow down, keep further back from the vehicle in front and keep all manoeuvres gentle,” they advised.
