Lupita Nyong’o Comments On The Oscars Diversity Problem

The #OscarsSoWhite controversy isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The latest star to speak out about the fact this year’s Oscar nominations were overwhelmingly white is Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o.

Lupita took to Instagram to post a statement on how she feels about the issue. She wrote that she was ‘disappointed by the lack of inclusion? and that it prompted her to think about ?unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture.? The 32-year-old actress goes on to stress that awards like the Oscars should be ?a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has to offer today.?

Lupita won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2014 after her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Other actors who have slammed the Academy include George Clooney, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Oyelowo and Spike Lee. Clooney made various points in an interview with?Variety?about the undeniable bias at play, Clooney said: “If you think back 10 years ago, the Academy was doing a better job. Think about how many more African Americans were nominated. I would also make the argument, I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?” The actor/director made the point that movies such Creed, Concussion, Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton should have received more nominations before adding that t wasn’t just African-American filmmakers and actors being slighted. “For Hispanics, it’s even worse. We need to get better at this. We used to be better at it,” he said. Sobering words that we think everyone should keep in mind during next month’s red carpet frenzy.
