Kate Winslet Won't Allow Her Children To Use Social Media

Here at IMAGE, we've made no secret of our love for the admirable woman that is Kate Winslet. From her body-positive thoughts on airbrushing to wanting to be a role model for her audience, this acting tour de force undoubtedly uses her role in the public eye to make known her beliefs and empower us at the same time.

In a recent interview, the star shared her views?on technology, and more specifically her disdain for the digital age in which we live. She doesn't allow her children to use apps, and in particular said she feels social media has a huge and negative impact on young women's self-esteem.

?All they ever do is design themselves for people to like them. And what comes along with that? Eating disorders. And that makes my blood boil. And that is the reason we don't have any social media in our house,? she told the Sunday Times.

Despite having a prime role in the upcoming film, Steve Jobs - a biographical take on the eponymous Apple founder - she isn't a fan of the digital medium and advised parents to take iPads ?out of their children's hands? because they can ?lose control? of them to social media.

?I think the parents are losing control, especially if they're busy parents,? she said.??It's really hard to keep your finger on the pulse. It's an incredibly powerful educational resource if it's used correctly, but I think the problem is a lot of these things aren't being used correctly. I think they're [phone devices etc.] being completely abused.?

She explained that when her daughter, Mia, wanted to create her own Instagram account, Winslet told her that to share your photos online is like ?giving away memories.? The Labour Day star?also expressed her concern for the addictive nature of smartphones and other devices, adding, ?People practically kiss them goodnight.?

She advised parents to confiscate devices (as she does with her children), to attempt to limit the time the younger generation spends on social media:??Take the device out of their hand; don't let them sleep with it.?

Winslet also said she felt that such devices hugely impacted on family life.??It takes every member of a family to be a family, and there are too many interruptions these days - and devices are a huge interruption.?

Her views are certainly on the strong albeit logical side, do you agree with her?
