Irish actress Caitriona Balfe receives fourth Golden Globes nomination

Award season is upon us and already Ireland are making their mark this year; Monaghan actress Caitriona Balfe has received a Golden Globes nomination for the fourth year in a row, while Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite, an Irish production from Element Pictures, has secured five nominations for the 2019 Golden Globes.

Balfe is a Globes regular at this stage with a fourth nomination as best actress in a television series, for her turn in the popular time-travelling adventure Outlander - a series that has a massive fan base across the pond in particular. The actress expressed her delight on social media, saying she was "completely shocked" at the news.

The producers of The Favourite have said they were thrilled that the film, which received five nods, was the second most nominated film after Adam McKay’s Vice, which scored a surprise six mentions. Their count is notably alongside A Star is Born, which also received five nominations.

“It’s absolutely brilliant for the film,” Ed Guiney, the producer of The Favourite, told the Irish Times. “Getting these nominations is a very important way of telling audiences: this is a film you should see this year.” As the Golden Globes are often a key indicator as to which films will receive Oscar nominations, this is a strong sign that the movie will achieve similar success at the Academy Awards.

Fellow actress Saoirse Ronan missed out on any nods this year, despite being tipped to receive one for her acclaimed performance in the title role of Mary Queen of Scots.

Of all the films deemed a shoo-in to win, A Star is Born, currently the second-highest-grossing film of 2018 in Ireland, is expected to take home all its gongs.

The Golden Globes will air on January 6th, 2019.
