BAFTAs 2018: Irish stars receive four nominations

Whip out the champagne because Ireland has just received four BAFTA nominations, the British Academy has confirmed today. The awards, which will take place on Sunday 13th May, celebrate talent in the film, TV and gaming industries – and by the looks of it, Irish women are the ones to beat.

Sharon Horgan received two nominations, including Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for her role in Channel 4’s Catastrophe. She plays the part of an Irish teacher in London who becomes pregnant after a brief love affair with Rob Norris (played by Rob Delaney), an American businessman. The comedy follows the unlikely couple as they come to terms with their tricky situation. As co-writer, Horgan was also nominated for Best Scripted Comedy.

As well as that, Sinead Keenan has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Little Boy Blue. The Dublin-native stars in the ITV drama series about the real-life murder of Rhys Jones in 2007.

But Irish women aren’t the only ones represented in the list of nominees. Cork-born Graham Norton has been nominated for Best Entertainment Performance for his BBC chat show, The Graham Norton Show.
