Getting Hitched At Home: Adele & Gene

Getting Hitched At Home: Adele & Gene

Thinking of getting hitched at home? Does it sounds like a logistical nightmare or an intimate dream? We talk to brides?who’ve been there, done that, to find out?

ADELE & GENE

LOCATION: ADELE’S GRANDPARENTS’ FARM IN COOTEHILL, CO CAVAN

PHOTOGRAPHY: KATIE FARRELL

My grandparents? farm is just such a special place. It’s tranquil and vast with gorgeous views. It blew Gene away from the moment he first saw it.

We loved the freedom of having our wedding on the farm. It meant that it was genuinely our day, from the ground up. We decided the layout of the event, what time the bar closed ??which was never ??and it meant we could invite as many people as we wanted. We set tents up around the farm for overspill.

Having the family on site for the week beforehand to help set up was great fun. Although the rural element did mean some people got lost. One group missed some of the wedding because of this, which was a disappointment.

We themed the bash as a country festival/summer fete. We scoured vintage and brik-a-brak shops for inspiration and quirky finds. I made lots of the table setting elements and props (with lots of help) and Gene built the bar.

My tip for others? Brace yourself for hard work, sleepless nights and long days but nothing can prepare you for the feeling of pride, joy and relief when it all works out. I will never forget how happy it made me to see my Grandparents reaction, proud as punch, as without them none of it could have been achievable.
