We’re now just under a month away from C Day, and the celebrations are starting to kick off. Dublin is starting to look a little more sparkly, and we’re all pretty excited for the next month of getting festive. Happy weekend from IMAGE!
On Friday: Look to the past at Peoples/ Persons at Copper House Gallery
A new exhibition by Taproot Art, Peoples/Persons explores portraits throughout the ages and how the human form has been depicted throughout history. With pieces by Decoy, Aches, & James Kirwan as well as contemporary artists Neil Dunne, Hugh Cooney, Jay Miriam and Kathryn Rose, the exhibition’s opening night on Friday will also feature music and hot whiskey. A perfect night out. From 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Kevin Street.
All weekend: Be inspired at Riso City at Lucky’s on Meath Street
Inspired by a Japanese method of printing, Riso City is a new exhibition running on Meath Street until the end of the year by the all-female artist collective Epoch, who are inspired by current affairs, social issues, feminism, climate change and mental health. In this case, the inspiration behind Riso City is the worsening housing crisis in Dublin city. The bold and colourful prints displayed at the exhibition will reflect some of the key issues of the crisis, including overcrowding, rent prices and social housing. While the opening night was on Thursday, the prints will still be available to buy via Epoch’s Instagram, with the proceeds going to Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH).
On Saturday: Get in the spirit with the matinee screening of Elf at the Sugar Club
“SANTA’S COMING! I know him! I know him!” This film is iconic and I won’t hear a word against it. If you’re looking to release your inner kid and have been feeling distinctly un-Christmassy so far this season, this screening of the Will Ferrell classic at the Sugar Club on Saturday will definitely fix the problem. The movie starts at 4:45 pm, with popcorn, pizzas and beers and cocktails being served.
On Saturday: Celebrate good times at Nile Rogers and Chic at the RDS on Saturday
Now normally, I would be loathed to put Nile Rodgers and Chic on the event guide, as they seem to play a gig in Dublin literally every hour. But having seen them play live at Electric Picnic, I am sold – their performances are unreal, and to kick off the party season, you won’t find a better night out in the city. Tickets from €59.50.
On Sunday: Wear army pants and flip-flops to Mean Girls at the Stella Theatre
The Stella can always be relied upon for a gorgeous night out, and this Sunday, they’re subtly jumping on the Ariana Grande-led bandwagon of iconic chick flicks, and showing Mean Girls at 12:30 pm. Apart from being one of the most quotable movies of all time, it also has a hilarious reference to the festive season (you will never listen to Jingle Bell Rock without slapping your thighs again) to keep the Christmas feels going.
