Five of the best new releases on Netflix this month

Five of the best new releases on Netflix this month

This January, we are ready for a fresh start on our screens. The festive binge watches of Home Alone and Love Actually are finally out of our system, and normal services can now resume. And a new year means a new Netflix line-up.

From tear jerkers to thrillers, old favourites and new originals there is a lot to be excited about on Netflix this January and we have picked five of the best.

Fault In Our Stars

If there was ever a film to wail to your heart’s content, this is the one to do it with. Based on the novel by John Greene and starring the lovely Shailene Woodley and the handsome Ansel Elgort, this one has broken many a heart. Woodley plays a 16-year old cancer patient who is forced to attend a cancer support group by her parents but it is there that she meets cancer survivor Augustus Waters and the sweetest of romances ensues. Just don’t forget your box of tissues. Coming to Netflix on January 13.

Sex Education

This Netflix original features The Fall star Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield who you might remember as Bruno from the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Butterfield plays Otis, a socially awkward high school virgin who lives with his sex therapist mother (Anderson). Because of the knowledge provided to him by his mother, he teams up with ‘bad-girl’ Maeve to set up a clinic for their fellow student’s sexual problems. It’s a quirky one, but we think it could be an absolute gem. The series is released on January, 11.

Inception

Inception is the type of film that makes you question life, existence and how you just spent the last two hours of your life. It’s a slow one to start and takes a certain amount of concentration to keep up but once you stick with it, you are in for a silver screen treat. The film has a stellar cast including Leonardo Dicaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy and Ellen Page and tells the story of a professional thief (Dicaprio) who places himself in the dreams of others to steal information from them. Put this one on your must-watch list when it comes to Netflix on January, 15.

FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened

FYRE Festival became one of the most talked about events in the world, even though it barely came to fruition. Billed as the complete luxury festival experience, the event was due to take place on the island of Great Exuma in the Bahamas and was promoted by a host of supermodels and social influencers including Hailey Baldwin, Emily Ratajkowski, and Bella Hadid. However, what happened was a complete disaster. Everyone needs to watch this when it arrives on Netflix January 18.

Lion

This 2016 biographical drama film starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman was nominated for six Oscars and for good reason. Patel plays Saroo Brierley who as a child got separated from his family in Burhanpur but, 25 years on, sets out to find them. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once and is a perfect choice for these winter nights when it arrives on Netflix on January 20.
