‘Find out what you like doing best, and get someone to pay you for doing it’ – DJ, presenter and writer Tara Stewart

If ever there was an embodiment of a ‘Dublin cool girl’, Tara Stewart definitely has it down (even though she was born in Australia). Since visiting Ireland in 2011 and deciding it was the place for her, Tara has made a huge mark on the Irish music scene.

Between being the showbiz reporter for RTÉ 2FM , writing for Dublin-based creative music magazine District and DJ’ing at the coolest spots in the city, her time is taken up by showcasing great Irish creative talent, including her own. Her quick immersion into Irish life may be down to her dad being from Belfast, but Tara is carving her own Dublin legacy, with chunky gold hoop earrings in tow.

What’s been your greatest success professionally?

Interviewing Shania Twain.

Name a woman (or women) past or present that you look up to

Model and presenter Chrissy Teigen, singer/ songwriter Ariana Grande, rapper Missy Elliott, Co-Founder of Not Another Agency Emma Fraser and founder of the Repeal Project Anna Cosgrave.

At what point in your life did you learn about your field of work? What called you to it?

I’ve been a musician since I was nine years old, so music has always been a massive passion and love of mine. With DJ’ing, I love playing music for people and helping people have a good night out. It really gives me a lot of joy selecting songs that I feel people will love.
In terms of radio presenting, one day I was on Twitter and saw a radio station advertise that they were looking for fill-in presenters. When I saw that, I was like: “hang on a second. I’d love to do that.” I made a demo in my bedroom and sent it in. Needless to say, it was really bad! However, it got the ball rolling.

What is your favourite way to entertain?

I want to say dinner. Although, I need to live in a gaff that has room to host a dinner first!

What’s the best piece of advice you were given starting out?

“What’s for you won’t pass you”.

What’s your favourite finishing touch to an outfit? Do you have a ‘power piece’ that always gives you confidence?

Jackets, jackets, jackets. I am obsessed with them. My look is basically the same black halter top, black pants and trainers every day, and then a whopper jacket to finish it off.

Who is your style icon?

Missy Elliott and Tracee Ellis Ross

Do you have a quote or a personal motto that inspires you?

Find out what you like doing best, and get someone to pay you for doing it.
