Today’s the day – Christmas FM is launching across Ireland

After great anticipation, Christmas FM is finally launching on radios across Ireland for Christmas 2019

“The wait is finally over… we are switching on Christmas in Ireland TODAY!” announced the merry elves at Christmas FM. “Tune in at 1 pm to find out what we play as the first song of Christmas 2019.”

The radio station, which first launched in 2008, confirmed it will “be switching Christmas on in Ireland” this afternoon, Thursday, November 28. Not only will the team of volunteers play festive classics, but also modern versions of Christmas tunes. For many families, today’s launch marks the beginning of the holiday season.

Charity partner

As Christmas is the season of giving, Christmas FM has teamed up with an official charity partner to raise money for a good cause. This year, all proceeds will go to the children’s charity Barretstown.

Barretstown, which was founded by philanthropist Paul Newman in 1994, serves children affected by serious illnesses – primarily cancer and serious blood diseases, as well as their families.

Through its free, specially-designed camps and programmes, Barretstown brings back the fun of childhood. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the charity has served more than 50,000 campers.

On its website, Christmas FM says it is “aiming to raise funds which will go directly towards Barretstown’s mission of rebuilding the lives of seriously ill children and their families, through life-changing Therapeutic Programmes in a safe, fun and supported environment.”

Song contest

Not only will Christmas FM play hit festive tunes in the run-up to Christmas Day, but it is also encouraging budding songwriters to get involved.

Every year, the radio station runs a song contest, in which singers and songwriters can write and record their own Christmas song or cover version. “The Christmas FM Song Contest is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring singer/songwriters to be heard by Christmas FM’s national and international audience,” say organisers.

The winning entry will be played live on-air and will be named the Official Christmas FM Song Contest Winner.

With the competition only open for entries until 1 pm on December 1, there’s no time to delay. See here for contest rules.
