Boots launches ‘Safe Space’ resource for those suffering under domestic violence

Domestic violence victims can access Boots’ Safe Spaces from today across the country

Boots Ireland has today launched its Safe Spaces initiative, in partnership with Safe Ireland, to aid women who are experiencing domestic violence.

Any woman dealing with domestic abuse can, from today, access a Safe Space consultation room in any of the 88 Boots stores around the country, and from there, can contact one of the 39 frontline specialist domestic abuse services across the country for free, confidential support and advice.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Ireland earlier this year, resources and charities for domestic abuse have reported a spike in calls and enquiries about support.

There has also been a spike in calls to the Gardaí relating to domestic abuse.

Speaking on today’s Morning Ireland on RTÉ, Co-CEO of Safe Ireland Mary McDermott said that victims of domestic abuse are being forced to choose between the threat of infection and the threat of abuse.

She said that she hopes the new initiative with Boots will attempt to address the stigma and silence around abuse.

If you or someone you know is dealing with domestic abuse, you can call Women’s Aid 24 hours a day at 1800 341 900. If you are in immediate danger, contact the Gardaí at 999/112.
