Blackrock village: Our new favourite spot to eat and shop in Dublin

When it comes to top quality food and stunning, curated items to that are just too beautiful to leave behind, Blackrock village has got it going on.

It’s thanks to a gradual surge of dedicated independent retailers opening up their doors (not to mention the age-old Blackrock market) that the area is finally getting the kudos it deserves, and frankly, it’s been a long time coming.

Such is its reputation amongst those who appreciate the finer things in life, this coastal town is becoming a serious “destination” amongst locals and visitors alike. People are now coming from far and wide to experience the hype for themselves, and if you know the area it’s not hard to see why.

We’ve listed out the specific places we love to spend our time in whenever a trip to Blackrock calls, so scroll on and take note; there’s something here for everyone. Seriously.

Breakfast/ lunch

Bear Market Coffee

19 Main Street Blackrock Co. Dublin

Bear Market Coffee was chosen to be the official coffee supplier for the royal visit of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Dublin earlier in July. Need we say more? Their almond croissants are also to die for, and their array of energy balls make for a perfect takeaway treat to enjoy later.

The Mellow Fig

George’s Ave, Blackrock, Dublin

This quirky spot will always hit the spot when all you want is a hearty brunch and hefty pot of tea (complete with tea cosy) after a walk on a Saturday morning. The eggs benedict deserve special mention, as does the smoothie bowl. Very child-friendly, especially on the weekend.

The Vanilla Pod Eatery

Blackrock Shopping Centre, Frascati Rd, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

You’ll often find a queue here, but that’s a good sign of The Vanilla Pod’s popularity in the area. Come for a coffee and stay for the pancakes, or one of their freshly baked sweet treats.

Dinner

3 Leaves

Unit 30, 19A Main St, Blackrock Market

A small (but mighty) restaurant run by husband and wife Santosh and Milie, the team are passionate about serving up top quality Indian food in a casual, friendly setting. Go for the “tasting” platter to get a full idea of their talents.

Note: being BYO, if you mention 3 Leaves when buying a bottle of wine in Blackrock Cellar before your meal you’ll get a discount!

Heron & Grey

Blackrock Market 19A Main Street Blackrock Co. Dublin

One of the most sought-after dining experiences in Dublin right now, Heron & Grey’s minimalistic (but reasonably-priced) menu changes regularly and consistently surpasses the expectations of the lucky few who secure a booking. Andrew, the gregarious host, is another highlight; buzzing around the tiny space and ensuring that all customers are well looked after.

Le Pastis

9 Georges Avenue, Blackrock, Co Dublin

If French cuisine is your thing, then you’ll want to add Le Pastis to your bucket list immediately. Expect to enjoy reasonably priced, classic French dishes made up of locally-sourced, organic ingredients (where possible), alongside some stunning wines and a background soundtrack of swoony jazz.

Drinks

El Celler

19A Main St, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

After a long day’s work, is there any purer joy than a few glasses of top quality wine alongside some plates of delicious tapas? When such a yearning strikes, El Celler in the Blackrock Market is the place to go. Complete with a cosy fire and cave-like walls, El Celler sets a really special tone for date nights too, and is an ideal spot if your date is a wine enthusiast.

Jack O’Rourkes

15 Main Street, Blackrock, Co.Dublin

Throughout the years Jack’s has managed to retain its long-established high standards, welcoming everyone with a friendly nod and wink and never failing to pour a good pint. This old haunt provides the perfect, cosy setting to while away a Sunday afternoon, catching up with friends or watching a match. Many of the staff has been there for years and will always go out of their way to ensure you are well looked-after.

Fashion

Blue Boutique

Blue Boutique

51 Main St, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

Nicola Fox runs the roost at Blue boutique, and has been pivotal in securing the shop’s reputation as one marked by innovation and attention to detail. Their clothes have a casual, comfortable feel about them, whilst retaining a crisp, contemporary finish. The staff are always happy to help and help you find an outfit to fit your budget and personal style.

Marimar

47 Main St, Blackrock, Dublin

A gorgeous go-to boutique for Irish women who prefer to fill their wardrobes with classy,  minimalist fashion. It’s not all pastels and linen here though; you’ll find some stunning statement pieces along these rails, too, which provide the splash of colour we all need throughout the week – especially on a dull day.

Bella Boutique

Blackrock Market | 19a Main Street, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

Buying and selling luxury designer clothing at affordable prices is what the Bella team do best. The motto “life is too short to wear boring clothes” reigns supreme here, and that much is clear when you take a look around the store. Their array of new and pre-owned luxury clothing is full of character and sophistication, and always changing to keep you coming back for more.

Miscellaneous

Triggerfish

The Triggerfish Cook Shop

2b Main Street, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

Walk through the door of this store and you’ll find a space that is dedicated to beautiful but functional cookware, kitchenware & tableware. Owner Bob Toal hopes that these items will inspire people to create beautiful meals with ease and pleasure, and although the products come from every corner of the world, the company specifically seeks to provide a platform to Irish designers and artisans where possible.

Blackrock Market

Blackrock Market | 19a Main Street, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

The Blackrock Market currently has more than 50 traders in attendance, and it’s been growing in popularity and offering over the last few years. This market sells an incredible array of goods; including books, clothes, bric-a-brac, antiques, crafts and edibles; including gorgeous poké bowls and the best falafel going. The Blackrock Market is open every weekend 11am-5.30pm, plus Bank Holiday Mondays.

Kirk Modern

Unit 4a Annaville Avenue, Blackrock

Kirkmodern is owned by Geoff Kirk, a purveyor of eye-catching, mid-century modernist design. From tables and chairs to soft furnishings and lighting, every single item in KirkModern is vintage and is sold in as near original condition as possible. Keep up to date with their Facebook page, where they post regular updates of the latest piece to arrive in store.

The Sustainable Store

Blackrock Market | 19a Main Street, Blackrock, Co. Dublin

Jonny and Katie set up this fantastic zero-waste store in the Blackrock Market in the hope of bringing plastic-free, chemical-free products to the people of Ireland, and they have done so expertly. They sell beautifully made, ethically produced products and are always happy to answer any sustainability queries you may have.
