Beauty, fashion and curiosity: here’s What’s On this summer weekend

Humid, cloudy and not a concert in sight – on the surface, this weekend doesn’t look like a goer. But as we all know, there’s always fun to be had in the city, especially on a July weekend, and this week’s What’s On guide has you covered. Happy weekend from IMAGE!

Friday: See your ‘perfect’ face at the THROUGH THE ARTIFICIAL LOOKING GLASS at the Science Gallery

Snapchat and Instagram filters already let us alter and morph our faces to our social-media friendly liking, but how would you feel if you saw your face in its ‘perfect’ dimensions? The Science Gallery is hosting an event tonight to discuss how social media like this has altered our perceptions of beauty, and the role that AI plays in enhancing and even exploiting beauty standards. You’ll also have the chance to try their Biometric Mirror – a screen that analyses your facial features and alters them to a ‘perfect standard’. Our own Junior Beauty Editor Holly O’Neill tried it for herself last month, with interesting results.

Saturday: Get serious about culling fast fashion at the Sustainable Fashion Dublin Summer Party& The True Cost Screening

The girls at Sustainable Fashion Dublin are on to another winner with this week’s event, as they host another famous swap shop, along with a screening of The True Cost – a 2015 documentary that focuses on the damage that fast fashion is doing to the planet. Always ensuring a fun and easy atmosphere, Taz and Geraldine have cultivated a brilliant community in Dublin with their crusade to bring slow fashion to the masses, and now, with Geraldine based in Paris, they’re going international. A great event for a Saturday morning.

All weekend: Be inquisitive at the Festival of Curiosity across Dublin

Curiosity won’t kill the cat this weekend as Dublin’s Festival of Curiosity takes over the city. Exploring science, nature, music and art, the festival has something for everyone and all ages, with some great events around the Moon Landing for the week that’s in it. Our pick of the weekend? A sensory walk around the garden trail of the Chester Beatty library.

Saturday and Sunday: Embrace the summer at the Laya’s Healthcare City Spectacular in Cork

And of course, if you like the idea of getting out of Dublin this weekend, Cork has one of the biggest events in Ireland going on too. The Laya City Spectacular, having previously taken over Merrion Square earlier this month, is heading to Fitzgerald Park, and boasts some of the best street performers in the country. A great one for the kids, you can expect to find dancers, singers, fitness classes, acrobats and so much more. A great summer party to mark the middle of the season.
