Ana Kriégel trial: Boy A and Boy B have been sentenced in Dublin court

Ana Kriégel trial: Boy A and Boy B have been sentenced in Dublin court

The two boys who were convicted of murdering 14-year-old Ana Kriégel have now been sentenced

Justice Paul McDermott has announced the sentences for two boys convicted of killing 14-year-old Ana Kriégel on May 14, 2018.

The boys, known only as Boy A and Boy B, were 13 years of age when they murdered the schoolgirl in Glenwood House on the Clonee Road in Lucan.  Boy A was also convicted of aggravated sexual assault and is now on the Sex Offenders Register.

While Boy A has accepted he played a part in Ana’s death, he denies sexually assaulting her. Boy B continues to deny any involvement in her killing.

Sentencing

Justice Paul McDermott sentenced Boy A to life in prison for the murder of Ana Kriégel. He has also sentenced Boy A to 12 years for aggravated sexual assault. Both sentences will run concurrently.

Boy B will be detained for 15 years, with review after eight years.

Crime correspondent for the Daily Star Michael O’Toole, who was present for the sentencing, tweeted, “There is an entirely different statutory regime for children convicted of murder. Judge says there is the power to detain a child convicted of murder for life. But [the] court can order detention AND then supervision, with supervision phase in the community.

“Judge says boys will be transferred to an adult prison once they reach [the] age of 18… Boys are 15 now.”

O’Toole went on to report that a child can normally not be detained for more than three years, “but on indictment, as in murder, there is power to hand down a longer detention period, but reasons must be given”.

These reasons can include the fact that a child or teenager’s personality may not have fully developed.

“There may be capacity for a child to change, despite [the] awfulness of [the] crime. But the crime cannot be ignored,” he tweeted from the court.

“They understood the consequences of their actions. It was a murder of the most serious and shocking type.”

Both Boy A and Boy B will begin their sentences today.
