4 Potential Oscar Contenders To See This Autumn

We might be a bit early for the 2017 Oscars, but movies that come out around these dates are usually firmly placed in awards seasons. These are the four potential Oscar contenders that you shouldn’t miss, coming soon to a cinema near ?you.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

Two-time Academy Award winner Ang Lee returns to directing (for the first time since his?visual masterpiece Life Of Pi was nominated for 11 Academy Awards) for?Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. ?Newcomer Joe Alwyn stars as 19-year-old war hero Billy Lynn, who returns from Iraq for a victory tour and is plagued by traumatic flashbacks of what really happened on the battlefield. Based on Ben Fountain’s bestselling novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk “takes you to the front lines of the human spirit.” It’s also the first film ever to be shot in 4K, using a 120 frame per second rate.

Out November 11th.

Birth Of A Nation

Set in the antebellum South, Birth Of A Nation is based?on the true story of preacher?and leader of a slave rebellion, Nat Turner. ?Nat Turner’s slave owner used his preaching to subdue unruly slaves, and after witnessing many atrocities,?Turner?organized?for supporters to join him in a slave revolt.

This is the directorial debut of actor Nate Parker, and Fox Searchlight Pictures bought the worldwide distribution rights for Birth Of A Nation for $17.5 million, the biggest deal in the history of the Sundance Film Festival. After the Oscar diversity controversy last year, Birth Of A Nation should adjust the balance. Though we’d like to see diversity in more stories in film than slavery and the civil rights movement – in the words of Barack Obama, diversity makes for better art and entertainment – the trailer holds a powerful message, “injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Out October 7th.?

Snowden

From three-time Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone comes Snowden,?the story of NSA employee Edward Snowden, who leaked thousands of classified documents exposing illegal surveillance by the NSA. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Nicholas Cage, Snowden and The Revenant are the first completed feature films shot with the new 6.5k ARRI 65 camera.

Out September 16th.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Based on Ransom Riggs’ 2011 novel, directed by two-time Oscar nominee Tim Burton, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children?tells?the story of Jake, who discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, and meets Miss Peregrine, the headmistress to orphans who hold strange powers.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children reunites Tim Burton with Eva Green and is Samuel L. Jackson and Judi Dench’s first time collaborating with Burton. It’s also the 11th collaboration for Tim Burton and three-time Oscar-winning?costume designer Colleen Atwood.

Out September 20th.?
