10 Of The Best Hot Chocolates To Try In Dublin

10 Of The Best Hot Chocolates To Try In Dublin

Ah, hot chocolate; who doesn’t love it in winter? The humble hot chocolate a.k.a the ‘hug in a mug’ – is frequently (and unfairly) underrated and overlooked in favour of toffee nut latte concoctions at this time of year.  We’ve compiled a list of what we feel are the crème de la crème of chocolate drinks to be had in Dublin, perfect for drinking during this spell of bitterly cold weather. Go forth, drink up and be merry.

1. The Classic

Butlers – Dark Hot Chocolate

When it comes to all things chocolate, no one can deny that Butlers is a mecca. There’s a reason that these guys are renowned, and it essentially comes down to three sweet words: Dark Hot Chocolate. The level of intensity in each serving is such that it comes in a smaller-than-usual cup; it’s about substance, not size here. Paired with a free choccy on the side, because more is more, it’s the perfect fix for any self-respecting chocolate junkie.

2. The Tongue Teaser

Vice Coffee inc. – Maltesers Hot Chocolate

Vice Coffee is known for serving some of the best coffee in the city, but what you may not yet know is that the team have a secret, and it comes in the form of an already-melted-yet-stills-melts-in-your-mouth Malteser Hot Chocolate. Light, airy, and truly gorgeous… It’s the stuff of which chocolate dreams are made.

3. Boutique and Chic

Another decadent drink-of-dreams can be found on Dublin’s Drury Street and is one of the city’s best. Their viscous variation comes straight from the streets of Paris, so you know it’s going to be an indulgent drink worth having.

4. Ganache Goodness

A cup of molten dark chocolate ganache accompanied by a jug of steamed chocolate milk  of remixing to taste – if this isn’t your idea of chocolate heaven then we don’t know what is. Visit their North Dublin and Southside locations and see for yourself.

5.  One For Everyone In The Audience

Brick Alley

Why settle for a ‘regular ‘ hot chocolate, when you can have an “Amaretto Hot Chocolate With Macaroons”, a “Zabaglione Cream Hot Chocolate”, or a “Mou Hot Chocolate topped with pieces of crunchy meringue”… You’ll never look at warm chocolatey milk the same way again after you’ve tried one of Brick Alley’s many, many creations.

6. Have It All

The sly team behind The Fat Fox know just how to lure us in – remember the free porridge? Now they’ve got hot chocolates as swoony as the staff! Take your pick from milk, white, dark, and even oreo flavoured drinks, made all the sweeter when you know they use Belgian chocolate to make them.

7. Organic & Volcanic

Nick’s Coffee

Nick’s Ranelagh-based cafe makes hot chocolate with organic chocolate chips, so in a word: YUM. With the option of an an accompanying flake, caramel sauce and chilli flakes to top it off, we want this drink to get the recognition it deserves.

8. Naughty AND Nice

The Sweetest Thing – Baileys Hot Chocolate

The only thing better than a cup of steaming hot, chocolate goodness on a cold day, is a cup of steaming hot, chocolate goodness with a dash of Baileys thrown into the mix. Winter is a time for indulgence, and you don’t get more indulgent than one of these bad boys.

9. The “Ooh La La”

Ladurée on South William Street

Elegance, decadence and deliciousness, these are just some words that we associate with Ladurée, and no expense is spared when it comes to their signature drink, which is made using authentic Valrhona chocolate and fresh cream slowly mixed in… *drools*

10. Just Keep Stirring…

The novelty of getting a cup of steamed milk with a lump of Belgian chocolate attached to a stirring rod is not wasted on us. There’s something so innately fun about directing just how chocolatey your hot chocolate will be; you call the shots.
