Our breakfast habits have changed so much over the last few years. We’re eating out before midday a lot more and not just on the weekends. Breakfast catch-ups or sometimes just a treat for ourselves before the day kicks off — whatever the reason, here are some brilliant breakfasts around Dublin worth getting out of bed for this May bank holiday weekend.
Alma, 12 South Circular Road, Portobello, Dublin
This newly opened Portobello café is one of the prettiest spots in the city to start your day. The menu features the usual suspects of sourdough and eggs, but an Argentinian slant offers up some fresh combinations. Buttermilk pancakes are served with homemade Dulce de Leche sauce, brandy and orange mascarpone and vanilla pears, and poached eggs come with avocado, mushrooms, feta and salsa criolla. There’s also a hearty vegan breakfast and splendid coffee using local roasters Two Fifty Square.
Gertrude, 130 Pearse Street, Dublin 2
This latest opening from 3FE on Pearse Street is serving up some of the most fun breakfasts in town. Freshly brewed filter coffee is served in diner-style mugs with free refills (yes, you read that correctly!). The pancake stacks have had plenty of warranted Instagram attention, served glistening with honey butter and orchard syrup. Add bacon, sausage, egg or go all out with the fried chicken version. The Dirty Gertie is a great feed of toast, Gertrude baked beans, black pepper sausage, fried egg, bacon and homemade ketchup. There are more pious options of porridge and granola too, packed with bright flavours, and pastries and toast from the neighbouring Bread Nation.
Bowls, 56 Marlborough Street, Dublin 1
There’s simply no other breakfast like this in Dublin. At Bowls, Kwanghi Chan introduces Dublin to the best of Asian breakfast with a few more familiar options thrown in too. A must-try is the congee; a savoury, creamy rice porridge with chicken and scallions. Add some ‘Youtiao’ Chinese doughnuts, a breakfast favourite usually served on the side of congee. Or get stuck into some excellent dumplings, choosing from Siu Mai, bao and Har Gau. There are also safer options of skillet baked egg and avocado dishes. Whatever you order, make sure to leave space for the irresistible Macau style egg tarts.
Bread 41, 41 Pearse Street, Dublin 2
Breakfast at Bread 41 is always a good idea, as you’ll get first dibs on their brilliant bakes that tend to disappear as fast as come out of the oven. Pastry fans are spoilt with piles of sweet and savoury croissants, morning buns and buttery, flaky sausage rolls. Top-notch toast options include cinnamon walnut rye served with whipped ricotta & seasonal jam and mushrooms on sourdough toast with a fried egg, ketchup, blue cheese and house pesto. Decadent porridge is with burnt honey caramel, poached pear & toasted nuts. On Saturdays, the brunch menu offers even more.
Two Boys Brew, 375 North Circular Road, Dublin 7
Anyone who’s visited Australia and fallen in love with how they breakfast will adore this uber-stylish neighbourhood café that offers up a slice of Melbourne every morning. They nail the modern breakfast classics like coconut granola, sumptuous slow cooked porridge and simple eggs on sourdough. All-day brunch is available Monday to Friday with extras on the weekend. Blackberry and pear ricotta hotcakes come with gingerbread crumb and vanilla mousse. Avocado mash is topped with beetroot hummus and crumbled feta. The miso mushroom with sweet garlic confit, cavelo nero, whipped ricotta and crispy onion are piled on top of homemade onion brioche. Then there’s ‘The Counter’, awash with homemade temptations and, in true Aussie fashion, perfect flat whites every time.
Two Pups, 74 Francis St, Dublin 8
This buzzy Francis Street café brims with laid-back charm, warm welcomes and a splendid breakfast offering. Daily, you’ll find the breakfast menu scribbled on the blackboard - Two Pups Toast, overnight oats, porridge, eggs and avocado. On the weekends, they are joined by brunch options like wild mushrooms, basil & sorrel pesto, poached eggs & hazelnut or spiced maple banana, peanut cream & candied peanut porridge. And you may as well order a Gubbeen chorizo savoury scone while you wait. This is the perfect place to start a day of pottering, with the Dublin 8 surroundings matching the eclectic cafe perfectly.
Five Points, 288a Harold's Cross Road, Dublin 6W
A 3FE offshoot, Five Points is much more than just outstanding coffee. The smell of freshly baked scones hits as you walk in the door and a pared back and well-executed breakfast menu ticks all the boxes. Divine porridge was most recently served with apple, white chocolate and whipped yoghurt (it's like having an apple pie for breakfast), and there’s a stunning seasonal blood orange breakfast bowl at the moment with yoghurt and sesame brittle. Soft scrambled eggs come with homemade chilli jam. Add sausages, black pudding and bacon from the brilliant Whole Hoggs. On weekends, the creative takes on French toast and pancakes always sell out.
Tang, 9A Abbey Street Lower, Dublin 1
The newish Tang on Abbey Street is a picture-perfect, relaxed cafe with a strong vegetable focus. Monday to Friday breakfast offers includes small plates of sourdough toast and homemade jam or try it with hummus. They do great granola and porridge and stacks of buckwheat pancakes come with yoghurt and berries. The star here though is the Shakshuka - eggs poached in tomato, roasted red peppers & harissa topped with dukkah & tzatziki with sourdough toast. On weekends, expect dishes like Irish shitake mushrooms in miso and ginger on Le Levain with beetroot labneh, and hummus with crispy fried eggs and merguez sausage. Solid coffee and house kombucha top it all off.
The Pepper Pot Café, Powerscourt Town Centre, 60 South William Street, Dublin 2
City centre breakfasting isn’t always easy, but make your way to The Pepper Pot Cafe in Powerscourt Town Centre for charming balcony seats and a strong breakfast game. The all-day breakfast menu offers creamy scrambled eggs that are simple and sublime. Add bacon, cheese, mushroom or smoked salmon to bulk it out. Velvety organic porridge comes with various toppings but you should choose the roasted pear. There’s usually an irresistible special scribbled on the blackboard and the freshly baked scones are a real treat. They also do a good coffee and, importantly for breakfast, proper pots of tea.
Storyboard, Clancy Quay, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
A beautiful seasonal breakfast menu at Storyboard changes often but expect to find versions of excellent eggs, free range from Wicklow, on Le Levain sourdough — most recently, they were creamy parmesan eggs topped off with sour cream and chives. They have fun with delicious McNally vegetables, doing vegan dishes with their great spuds and usually some roasted pumpkin on toast. Porridge is always bright and packed with toppings — expect things like date caramel, toasted coconut, crystalised ginger and blood orange. 3FE is their go-to for coffee and it’s always well made.
