Interiors inspiration from my native South Africa

Interiors inspiration from my native South Africa

I grew up in South Africa, so deep, earthy colours, strong, graphic patterns and tribal interiors are my natural go-to. They remind me of the vibrant, creative and cosmopolitan country I call home and I still feel the draw towards striking tribal design, even though I moved to Ireland many years ago. It’s like your mothers home cooking, it carries a certain taste of memory. And I’m feeling the rush of nostalgia more often lately as woven baskets, tribal beadwork and colourful textiles pour into interiors shops this spring. I for one are loving every bit of it, here’s my pick of favourites.

The strong graphic pattern reminds me of the painted houses of the Ndebeles, an ethnic group in Southern Africa.
Tasselled cushion cover; €14.99; Embroidered cushion cover €19.99, both H&M Home

This striking range of cushions are based on traditional tribal designs and have been named after the Nagaland region in Northeast India where the designs originated.
Nagaland cushions, from around €31, Graham & Greene

Strong geometric patterns bring a touch of life to these plant pots. It reminds me of the hand-painted mud houses of Tiébélé: a town in Africa, where every house is a work of art.
Celine Pot, €18, Anthropologie

There is very little as comforting as freshly baked bread, kept warm in a rustic bread basket. The print reminds me of Shweshwe, a printed dyed cotton fabric widely used for traditional South African clothing.
Välgörande bread basket, €15, Ikea.

These baskets bring me right back into the African plains, the blue skies, the muted greens, the golden grass and the beautiful sunrises. The baskets are made by hand of recycled, twined paper and come in a gentle, earthy colour palette.
Braided Basket, set of 3, €135, Lamb Design
