Riverside cottage for sale in Wicklow for €995,000 even has its own treehouses

This dreamy little cottage for sale in Wicklow is the definition of a rural idyll, with a river running alongside, native planting and a plethora of wildlife just beyond its wrap-around verandah.

Listed with O’Neill Flanagan Estate Agents, the historic Wicklow granite and reclaimed redbrick house is located along the banks of the River Avonbeg, not far from Rathdrum.

A low stone wall marks the driveway, leading over a granite humpbacked bridge to the secluded spot, where a granite front and French timber doors welcome you in. With all the rooms located on one floor, this I-shaped house boasts beautiful forest views from every room.

An Irish Times piece from 2018 says it went up two years ago or €750,000 but according to the property register it never sold. Now, it’s back on the market with an extra chunk added on – they’re looking now close to the million euro mark.

The porch leads onto the large communal space that was once the original 1838 cottage. Now, a kitchen and sitting room run almost the full length of the house with soaring glass windows on either side. The flagstoned kitchen with its Rangemaster stove is spacious and bright, with vaulted ceilings and exposed roof trusses drawing the eye right up through the space, while maintaining the cosy cottage feel. The living room sits at one end, with two large windows on two wall and glass French doors on the other – there’s no fear of being overlooked here in this glorious private home.

The exterior glass doors lead onto the wrap-around flagstone verandah that envelopes much of the house, from which little paths lead to secret seating and al fresco dining areas. The river, heard and visible through the living room window, is just a few metres from the house, with a rustic bridge guiding you to the house’s own private beach.

At the other end of the kitchen is a roomy utility and washroom, as well as a hot press, keeping all the main function rooms in one spot. Beyond this large communal space and into the centre of the I is a second living room, which also opens onto the verandah, soaking up its verdant views. The ceiling is brought right up to the roof here too, with a snug stove at one end.

In the other end of the I are three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The smallest boasts large windows on three sides, while the two larger rooms have their own entrance onto the sweeping verandah. The main bedroom also has its own ensuite.

That’s the main house, but the tour is only just underway. The property covers two gorgeous acres of native trees, prairie grasses and wildflower woods, as well as the river itself and its diverging streams. Close to the house is a well-tended organic vegetable garden and all along the driveway up is loose, almost-wild planting.

The property comes with two timber-built treehouses, one two-storey suspended over the river with a meandering timber bridge up to it. Inside is a comfy space with a small staircase leading to a snug. There’s also a small balcony overlooking the river, ideal for stargazing.

The other is a smaller, exposed outpost is perfect for mediating or wildlife spotting in this busy nature reserve. A meadow running along the riverfront is also part of the property and a detached garage and several outhouses have the potential for further accommodation if needed.
