The mid-century designs to invest in now

Good design means thoughtfully made; each element considered and purposeful, where the beauty is in the making, and for which the mid-century designs of the twentieth century are renowned. Think Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Johannes Andersen, whose pieces have remained iconic through a generation.

Now, you can own your own little piece of mid-century design history, at DeVeres’ upcoming design auction on October 14. Here are the designs you can expect to see and why they are worthy of investment.

Model 94 rosewood dining chairs by Johannes Andersen

Rosewood is one of the signature materials of this design era which is incredibly sought after. The brick-red hardwood has an effervescent quality that shimmers in the daylight and, teamed with Johannes Andersen’s singular architectural eye for furniture, this set promises to be a heritage item passed down through generations.

Lounge chair and ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames

An instant sensation when it first launched in 1956, the lounge chair and ottoman is one of the Danish design duo’s most feted creations. The subject of documentaries and endless articles, this elegant leather and walnut seat remains a design cult classic to this day.

Italian crescent sofa in the style of Ico and Luisa Parisi

Another famed husband-and-wife design team, this sofa is of the style of their stunning Comma sofa. Retaining some of Art Deco-era elements of the designers’ past, it includes brass fixings and crushed velvet coverings, but with a mid-century update such as the space-age legs and three-dimensional curves. Original designs are almost impossible to come by but this replica has held to the Parisi’s high design standards.

The Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen

Manufactured by iconic Danish brand Fritz Hansen, Arne Jacobsen’s 1958 creation was developed alongside his Swan chair for a hotel in Copenhagen. It captures much of the design ethos that Jacobsen is known for – sculptural pieces that contrast with the linear architecture of a room.

All items will be available for viewing in the DeVeres showroom on Kildare street from October 11 to 14 with the auction beginning on October 14 at 2pm.
