Gifts to buy the houseplant parent in your life

Gifts to buy the houseplant parent in your life

We all know someone with an impressive houseplant collection, so here are some gift ideas that they’ll love.

For those of us that were city-bound for large parts of this year, our houseplants provided a daily dose of nature, a tiny injection of greenery into our lives.

And no matter where you live, houseplants are a wonderful addition to any room, instantly adding life, as well as their organic shapes and variety of textures.

It’s no wonder they’ve become so popular recently, and why you’re very likely to know someone with an impressive houseplant collection.

Whether you want to get them something this Christmas to complement their existing plants, or help them add to their cohort, we’ve put together some ideas.

Medium Yellow Semilla Ceramic Plant Pot, €19.68, Oliver Bonas

gifts for houseplant parents

Anyone who has even a few houseplants knows that you can never have too many pots. Your charges outgrow their existing ones, or need to be split, and suddenly you’re short a pot or two.

This mustard-coloured one with its irregular glaze is gorgeous, and would definitely get pride of place on my windowsill.

Indoor Plant Food and Atomiser Set, €29, Industry & Co

Made from seaweed that’s rich in nutrients, this food for indoor plants can be used on a range of species. It comes with a glass bottle to mix the food, which can then be spritzed over your plants as needed.

The kit contains 100ml of plant food, which is enough to last around a year, depending on the number of plants you have.

Support for climbing plants, €16.50, Designist

This clever support arrives totally flat, but folds out to 190cm for plants to climb up it. It’s a great way to incorporate climbing plants into your home, without letting them take over your shelves.

The Copper Plant Hanger, around €31, Astrl Fibres

gifts for houseplant parents

Made in Belfast, this macramé plant hanger would make a lovely gift. Crafted from hand-dyed cotton cord and finished with hand cut and polished copper beads, it’s currently available in three colours.

It can hold weight up to 4 kilograms, and would be a real feature in any room.

Polkadot Begonia, €18, Potty Mouth

If you want to give a plant, it’s nice to go for something unusual that they’re unlikely to have already, such as this gorgeous spotted begonia.

Potty Mouth will deliver their plants nationwide, and also have a great range of decorative pots if you want to include something extra.

How to Raise a Plant and Make it Love You Back, €17, Industry & Co

Most people with houseplants would love to know more about how best to care for them, so a helpful book is a great gift.

This one is written by plant experts Erin Harding and Morgan Doane, the creators of @houseplantclub on Instagram, so they’re well-equipped to address the most common problems people encounter with their plants.

Hilary Watering Can, €42, Anthropologie

A watering can that’s cute enough to leave sitting out all the time, this pink design has been crafted by hand from durable iron and stainless steel.

Its large handle makes it easy to hold, while its delicate spout means you can administer just the right amount of water.

Boho hanging plants, €40, Ballyseedy Home & Garden

A hanging planter and plants in one gift, this jute rope planter comes with two trailing plants included. They’re low-maintenance, so even an inexperienced plant lover shouldn’t have any trouble with them.

Available from Ballyseedy Home & Garden in Tralee, the plants are also pet-friendly, so pose no danger to curious cats or dogs.

Mini pruner, €4.95, Howbert & Mays Gardens

A good set of pruners is something you find yourself using constantly, whether it’s to cut herbs for cooking, remove dead flower heads or trim back plants to keep them from taking over.

This stainless steel pair fits neatly in your hand, and comes with a plastic sleeve to keep it safe when not in use.

Abstract Deco Platter, €42, Article

If, like me, the surfaces in your home are taken up with an increasing collection of tiny pots of seedlings and small plants, you’ll appreciate having a large tray or platter to put them on, instead of relying on saucers and plates.

This beautiful one from Article is made from hand painted terracotta, and has a lovely calm palette.
