3 quaint cottages in Co Galway to buy for less than €150,000

3 quaint cottages in Co Galway to buy for less than €150,000

You’re not alone in feeling like a permanent escape to the country wouldn’t be a bad idea during these strange times. Here are three cottages for sale in Galway that might be worth the investment

Who doesn’t dream of escaping cramped apartments, awkward encounters with housemates and the sinking feeling that you’re just throwing money away every time you pay rent? Now, as we (and, more importantly, our employers) realise that working from home is not just a possibility but potentially a productive one, the idea of settling into a little cottage somewhere in the country seems like a real option for the first time.

Regardless of where you’re looking to find a home, there are so many beautiful Irish cottages littering the countryside of every county. Some are in better states than others certainly, but all waiting for the right person to bring them back to life. Here are just three scattered across Co Galway to tempt you.

12 Clifden Glen, Clifden, €110,000

Clifden Glen is a small holiday village located just outside of the bustling town of Clifden and it’s the perfect base to explore Connemara’s magnificent hikes and trails. This cottage (above) has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, all with lots of natural light flooding the rooms. An open-plan kitchen/living/dining room to the rear of the house has a solid fuel stove and a glass extension.

Homeowners in Clifden Glen also have access to the village’s tennis courts, playground and football pitch, with a mix of neighbours who live there full-time and others who use theirs as a holiday home.

Lisnascreena, Ahascragh, €150,000

cottages for sale in galway

This stone cottage (above) near the Galway/Roscommon border has clearly been much loved and has been extensively renovated and extended in the last 15 years. With four bedrooms and one bathroom, it’s a spacious home with many modern amenities, including a beautiful country-style kitchen.

The property also comes with a number of outbuildings, including a dilapidated famine cottage that is ripe for a renovation.

Barrderry, Carraroe, €134,000

In the heart of Co Galway’s Gaeltacht region is this beautiful stone thatched cottage. Built around 1900, it’s got beautiful views down to the sea and nearby lough while still being just walking distance to the village of Carraroe. The cottage itself has much of the old-world charm you’d expect with rough stone walls and a beautiful stone fireplace as its centre.

Again, surprisingly spacious, it officially only has two bedrooms, located on the ground floor, but upstairs are two more rooms. These can’t be classed as bedrooms due to their low ceiling height but could certainly become accommodation in the future.

Bonus: Reyrower, Derrybrien, Loughrea, €55,000

For anyone looking for a real fixer-upper, this stone farmhouse in Loughrea has oodles of potential. While it does need extensive love and care, the original architecture of the house and its wild surrounding mean it could be the most beautiful little cottage for someone willing to take it on.
