Small space solutions: these 8 armchairs will fit right in

Small space solutions: these 8 armchairs will fit right in

If your home is bijou at best, small armchairs will be your workhorse, sitting beautifully in any room and easily moved from one to another.

If you live in a small home, you will know that there is a fine line between cluttered and classy. The key is finding a handful of design-led pieces that also serve a strong function, enabling you to move freely around the space while each item has a purpose.

A small armchair is a great investment, not least because you’ll find yourself sitting in it most days, but because it’s so incredibly practical. It’ll move with you from home to home, perhaps becoming a bedroom chair in your next room or a nursery seat. In fact, a small armchair will probably stay with you long after your first sofa, bed or dining table are all worn through or cast into the spare room.

Here is a selection of some of our favourite small armchairs that are absolutely worth the investment.

We’ve been considering snapping up this Mad Men-inspired armchair ourselves. The sage green velvet, the tweed, the burnt orange piping. The legs! Picture it next to a sleek walnut coffee table or else in the corner of an office (Jon Hamm is optional). Aunt Betty Cocktail Chair, €1,149, Woo .Design

If you’re looking for an armchair to snuggle up in and read (and nap, let’s be honest) the thick padding and high back of this armchair are sure to lull you right off. Ideal for a quiet corner or in a nursery. Draper armchair, €698, Meadows & Byrne

This electric blue beauty makes such a statement, it needs to be somewhere the world can see it – by a picture window or in a wide hallway. Plus, the back is as beautiful as the front so no need to back this baby in a corner. Sorento chair, €649, Casey’s Furniture

For something a little more bohemian, this padded cushion and back can be carried from a bedroom to the living room for a movie night to the garden for some sunbathing. Perfect for a teen bedroom or a relaxed space. Reema pink cushion base, €255, back, €145, Urban Outfitters

If you’re looking for an armchair for a small space, remember that it should be a design statement as well as something comfortable to sit in. It only takes an extra piece or two to make the space feel cluttered so it’s important to buy items you are absolutely smitten with, like this fabulous petrol-blue chair. Eno Studio Moira Velvet Armchair, €1,264, CA Design

This technically isn’t an “arm” chair but it was way too cute not to include. And who doesn’t love yellow? Poly yellow lounge chair, €285, Foxford

If your dining and living areas are blended together in an open-plan space, it can be hard to find a piece of furniture to link them both. Hay’s celebrated J42 chair could be the perfect problem solver, working well at the head of a dining table and as a spare seat in the living area. It would also make a great bathroom or bedroom chair. Hay J42 chair, €375, Industry & Co
