House on the Hill

The chairs were inherited and covered in colourful material from Ikea. The original stove was painted white, and the floorboards were sanded and white washed. The framed picture is by painter John Jobson.

A few years ago, Irish textile designer Susannagh Grogan launched her own line of hand-finished silk scarves. Since then, her bright and beautiful pieces have been stocked internationally – including Brown Thomas, Harvey Nichols and Anthropologie – and even spotted on Hollywood A-listers. Her quirky home in South Dublin, where she lives with husband Cormac Murphy and son Gabriel, reflects her bright and colourful taste.

Set in a sweet terrace across from Killiney Hill, the house may be small but more than makes up for it with spectacular views and ingenious space-saving solutions. Clutter is banished inside beautiful antique trunks, and upcycled cabinets house tasteful collections of knick knacks.

When Susannagh and Cormac moved in, the house was thankfully in no need of major structural work, so the couple quickly set about making their own with their furniture and personal touches. Old chairs have been reupholstered with modern, vibrant fabrics and the dark wood door frames and floorboards were white washed to create a light and airy atmosphere.

?I love a mixture of old and modern things,? Susannah explains. ?My perfect house would be a Georgian mansion filled with modern furniture.? While it may not be a mansion, anyone living in this home would certainly feel like royalty.
