6 Questions with Lucy Gaffney, Chairperson of Communicorp

Ahead of next weeks Networking Breakfast at The Marker Hotel, we caught up with the incredible Lucy Gaffney, Chairperson of Communicorp Group Limited to hear a little bit about her incredible career journey to date.

What has been the standout moment for you in your career to date?

There has been no-one standout moment for me in my career to date. I have been working since I’m 13 in my Fathers pharmacy and it has been one long journey of constant learning since then.

Are there any businesswomen who have inspired you throughout your career?

Early on in my career, I was working as a secretary for Karen Flynn, who later went on to become the head of marketing at Coca-Cola Ireland. Karen trained me up to account executive level and encouraged me to go for such a position. She was always very patient and generous with her time. That is my earliest memory of being?inspired by another woman in business.

What really fires you in business?

I adore working as part of a team with great people.

Have there been any particular challenges you’re proud to have overcome?

One thing that I find the hardest in business and something that never gets easier is dealing with disloyalty within a team.

Do you think there is such thing as a healthy work/life balance?

Yes absolutely. In my own experience it is a constant juggling act, however, I never struggled to prioritize as my?family will always come first. It is definitely not easy and I haven’t always got it right but I always try to integrate my work with my family. Perhaps you can have it all, but not all the time!

If you had one piece of advice for someone starting to climb the career ladder, what would it be?

Believe in yourself. The only boundaries you encounter along the way are the ones you put around yourself.

Hear Lucy Gaffney and Mary Ann O’Brien, Founder of Lily O’Brien’s chocolate, talk about business at our Networking Breakfast next Friday.
