It’s not just the spookiest time of the year, but also one of the tastiest, writes Ali Dunworth.
Halloween comes from the original Irish festival of Samhain, literally translated it means the ‘end of summer.' This also means harvest time, when food was in abundance so this month there’s a tradition of feasting along with plenty of interesting symbolic Samhain eating. At leasts that's what we are telling ourselves.
Here’s a taste of the seasonal and Samhain eating and events to look out for this month...
Slow in The City, November 2nd & 3rd
Hosted by Slow Food Dublin, this family-friendly event will take place over two days in and around Dublin 8.
The idea is to celebrate local food, drink and its producers, the importance of urban growing and community. On Saturday, there’s a host of ticketed local experiences, including a special walk with Fab Food Trails and a Cocktail Masterclass at the Roe & Co Distillery.
On Sunday, head to NCAD for food from Clonanny Farm, Bretzel Bakery and The Market Kitchen and workshops that include butter making, zero waste and drinks demos. There’s also a Soil Symposium for any keen growers.
Feast of the Dead at Franks, October 30th - November 3rd
This Camden Street wine bar is fully embracing the season and hosting a Samhain inspired feast all weekend.
The ticketed set menu dinner ‘celebrates the departed with food’, serving a five-course tasting menu with modern twists on Pagan rituals. Think whipped duck liver on barmbrack, colcannon, boxty and a unique take on a ‘jack-o-lantern’.
Paired with great and interesting wines of course. Some of the sittings are full, so grab tickets while you can.
Phoenix Park Walking Tour with lunch, Sundays in November
One of the prettiest places in Dublin in autumn has to be the Phoenix Park, acres of nature right on our doorstep. This bookable guided walk takes you through the wonders of the park for an off the beaten track tour.
After a couple of hours of walking, you’ll build up an appetite for lunch and head to the nearby historical Hole in The Wall pub that dates back to 1651 for a lunch of traditional Irish food and a pint of course.
4 Hands Food at The Fumbally, November 2nd, 3rd and December 7th
Well known for welcoming compelling and talented pop-up teams to their space, The Fumbally Stables latest booking is no different. Rose and Margaux of 4 Hands Food Studio are hosting a series of pop-up dinners over November focusing on their fair food philosophy.
Ingredients are local and sourced from small scale suppliers as much as possible. They produce naturally fermented foods and drinks using chemical-free and foods and strive to create exciting events to share their vision of the future of food.
For this seven-course tasting menu expect plenty of preserves, excellent sourdough and fun with fermented drinks.
Sticks at Storyboard, November 7th & November 28th
Omakase literally means ‘I will leave it with you’ and that’s exactly what the Sticks team do with their seven-course omakase tasting menu at Storyboard Cafe in Islandbridge.
Everything they serve is on sticks, hence the name. Expect lots of chargrilled and deep-fried treats, no cutlery needed, and inventive wine and sake pairings.
