Victoria Beckham for British Vogue shows the importance of a sense of humour in fashion

Victoria Beckham for British Vogue shows the importance of a sense of humour in fashion

It’s no secret that since Edward Enninful became the first male editor of British Vogue last year, and that the publication has gone from strength to strength. From his iconic first issue, featuring Adwoa Aboah on the cover, to icons like Oprah and Rihanna, Enninful’s reign as editor has been a story of firsts. And now, in preparation for the upcoming October issue, Enninful takes on another first – comedy on the cover. And the comedian of choice? Victoria Beckham.

Yesterday, British Vogue shared a behind-the-scenes video of a photoshoot for the upcoming issue, which celebrates ten years of style icon and fashion heavyweight Victoria Beckham. The video shows Beckham suggesting some pretty outlandish ideas for the shoot to a perplexed Enninful, striking poses and being her ‘minimalist’ self. It is, of course, a comedy sketch, but done so well that it took many viewers a couple of minutes to figure that out. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch below:

What the video does so well is allow Victoria Beckham to show her sense of humour, in a setting that is still so Vogue. As can happen with successful women, Beckham has previously been branded as ‘cold’, ‘stuck up’ and ‘stiff’ because of her dedication to her career and her carefully curated image. But you can’t tell anything about a person from their public image, and now Beckham finally has the chance to show what she’s really about. She’s funny, she’s down to earth and she isn’t afraid to make fun of herself and the public’s perception of her. Fashion can fall into the trap of taking itself too seriously at times, but here, Beckham shows exactly how to strike the balance between high fashion and comedy.

But while she may be using the term ‘one of the most enduring style icons of our time’ as a joke, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s the truth. Victoria Beckham is a true icon of reinvention – as one-fifth of the most 90’s group imaginable, Beckham took on a completely new life as a luxury designer and master of minimalism in her years since the Spice Girls, and became one of the most sought-after style gurus of our time. And now, she’s shown that she’s hilarious too. We love her even more.
