Legs-up: 9 party season tights that will update any outfit

They might seem a bit much, but coloured and pattern tights are the new essential party season accessory

Patterned and coloured tights remind me of my childhood. At one point, all of us will have worn a pair of those white woollen tights with flowers. Or – if you were lucky – a pair of glittering beauties which always made an appearance at Christmas Eve mass.

Somewhere along the way, we lost our sense of fun when it came to our hosiery. Tights signalled that summer was over. Black opaque tights heralded the banality of dark nights and mornings. They become the norm and the most experimental we would get was with a pair of 10 denier for a sheer look.

However, over the last number of seasons, patterned and coloured tights have made a comeback. Gucci and Fendi both showcased pairs with their respective logos which became instant hits on the fashion scene, while Ganni began to introduce pastels into its hosiery. Soon highstreet brands took note and now tights are designed with grown-up women in mind. The flowers and glitter are still there but these incarnations are more edgy than cute.

While cheap tights may be tempting, it's better to invest some money. Those at a lower price usually tear easily, and the more fashion-forward tights come in a low denier. Also, think climate change. The more torn tights we throw away, the more we are adding to the current fashion waste problem.

How to wear

These tights may seem tricky to master but in actuality, they are a simple accessory to apply to an outfit. Party dresses are all well and good, but freezing temperatures mean even the best fake tan can't hide the blue and purple hues encompassing our legs.

Tights are a way to conceal this while adding a little something different to your look. Plus, you never need to shave or tan your legs ever again.

If you tremble at the idea, stick with floral motifs, words and abstract shapes in classic black. If you do wish to venture a little further into this unknown world, lilac and white tights are a beautiful way to add some quirk and interest to an outfit.

Where to buy

A classic brand like Wolford has credibility for a reason. My own mother swears by those tights and won't buy from anywhere else. However, they are on the pricey side of the spectrum and it's better to stick to more classic styles if you are willing to spend the pennies.

Falke is another great option with a mix of both day to day and special occasion options.

Calzedonia is an Italian brand with good quality tights, a great price point and an even better selection. I now own a few pairs after being influenced by model Emma Louise Connolly and I can say with absolute conviction that they are some of the best I have tried.
