Three IMAGE staffers demonstrate how to wear a midi skirt to work, dinner and a date

Three IMAGE staffers demonstrate how to wear a midi skirt to work, dinner and a date

I have forgotten about the simple joy of skirts. I’m a trousers kind-of-woman by nature but lately, I have been unprecedently excited for bare legs and flowing hemlines. There are no “wrong” skirts: mini skirts are great on occasional outings, but it’s longer hem lengths that offer a kind of sassy polish – an ageless elegance. A midi skirt is the unsung hero of any wardrobe. The boldest way to wear a midi skirt? A toughened-up pair of knee-high boots, a delicate knit or a vintage chunky knit jumper in the perfect shade of millennial pink. A simple (or not so simple) one has transformative powers and here are three IMAGE staffers – and their favourite midi – to prove it.

I would have never thought of myself as a ‘midi-skirt’ type of woman, but since they’ve exploded in popularity this summer, I’m really getting into them. A year or so ago, I would have thought of midi-skirts as making me look like a nun crossed with Little House on the Prairie, but having seen how they can be styled to look young and fresh, I’m sold. A midi skirt is actually very agile and easy to wear; simply throw one on and your whole outfit is done. Not to mention how comfortable they are to wear too; the right midi skirt keeps me going from early-morning meetings to after-work cocktails. The way I style my look might not be for everyone, but leopard print and pink is basically my uniform, so I feel really great in this!

I bought this skirt back in May in Zara. I immediately loved the colour, the thick banded waist and full pleated skirt. It is so easy and comfy to wear and the pockets make it. I wore it to death over the summer, with flat gold sandals and a fitted black cotton t-shirt. I was about to put it away for the winter months but then tried it with knee-high leather boots and a cashmere jumper and now I’ll be wearing it right through ’til May again!

In the past 12 months, I have become a midi skirt convert; a style that now rivals my most loved denim jeans as my wardrobe staple. I tend to gravitate to midi styles that are tight around the waist and loose around the hips and legs because it suits my shape better. I love the sexiness of a side split, too. Initially, I only wore longer skirts during warmer months because it’s easy to team them with a pair of classic white trainers and a fitted t-shirt. It’s more challenging to style a midi skirt during winter (it’s very easy to look like a frumpy matron), however, I’ve found that the best way to balance this in-betweeny length in winter – whilst staying warm – is to pair it with semi-sheer tights over full opaques for a more flattering silhouette. I swap my trainers for a high-heel boot, and up-top a light, tucked-in knit works a treat.  I picked up this skirt in Next last Autumn, and it has been the perfect transitional piece that can be styled up or down, from season to season.
