The future looks bright at NYFW as designers send an explosion of colour down the catwalks

I love to colour-block as anyone who's read my recent post will know, so the latest collections at New York fashion week have been a delight to behold. Prabal Gurung, Sies Marjan and Anna Sui are offering a kaleidoscope of colour for AW19, which is making me excited about winter before we've even dipped our toes into spring. But that's just me; I'm a little like a hibernating animal as I love the months of September through to December more than any others (even when we have a heatwave in July/August).

Hair styles aside, there is much to love about Anna Sui's collection. Creative colour-blocking (purple with green; orange and pink) made simple tweed suits look fresh and modern and very un-Chanel-like.

A retro-inspired jumper dress with pockets, and a gorgeous check and shearling coat that could have leaped straight out of an episode of The Get Down spoke loudest to me, while a Kate Moss-esque leopard-print faux fur coat will be in high demand come August I suspect.

At Prabal Gurung, an exquisite confection of pink, teal, yellow and red elevated the idea of colour-blocking well beyond the simplicity of the pink and cobalt blue outfit I'm wearing today; it was an absolute dream. A padded pink coat with red lapels, cuffs and patch pockets tied with an aubergine belt was similarly wonderful.

Sies Marjan combined bold brights with directional silhouettes and proportion play; sleeves were longer length, as were sweaters, but layered over hip-length jackets. Fuchsia pink trims edged tangerine-coloured jackets, and chartreuse and lilac made for another unexpected but utterly modern colour combination.
