Style Watch: Flares are the only trousers you should be wearing this spring

Style Watch: Flares are the only trousers you should be wearing this spring

Flares are the trousers to buy this spring. Here we explain why and where you can purchase the best over the coming months

Like the seasons, trends have a pattern.

It may not be linear but each trend makes an appearance once again every few years. The fashion of the decades is played on repeat on the catwalks. Generation Z adores the 1990s’ and Y2K fashions, while we millennials have a penchant for the 1980s’ shapes and the 1970s’ aesthetic. The latter decade, in particular, is having a Saturday Night Fever revival in the shape of flares.

Directional

I bought my first pair of flares two years ago and ever since then, they have been my most worn trousers. Flattering, chic and allowing me to express my inner Stevie Nicks, they were a most welcome addition to my wardrobe. Trousers can often be quite boring in fashion terms; straight legs, high waist and not much action, but the flares appear like a directional piece of design.

When I say ‘flares are flattering’, I mean it. They look stunning on longer legs but lengthen the limbs of those on the shorter side too when worn with a heel. Flares are completely adaptable to any fashion taste whether you love fierce glam or yearn for casual tranquillity.

Pair with a light knit and converse for a simple yet effective look, or with high heels and a sheer shirt for nighttime glam. If you are buying denim flares, buy a pair in a longer length to get a floor-skimming effect and buy your normal size for a kick-flare appearance. If your flares are too long, bring them to a local tailor for a perfect fit.

Topshop and ASOS have the best options on the high-street right now, with ASOS designing some great plus-size options. Meanwhile, Net A Porter has the most comprehensive selection if you are looking to invest a little more.

So add some fun and a lot of flair to your wardrobe this spring.
