Will we see these fashion trends return with a Gossip Girl reboot?

Will we see these fashion trends return with a Gossip Girl reboot?

Gossip Girl, everyone’s favourite noughties show about the beautiful and blessed teenagers of New York’s Upper East Side, is coming back next year. Will these forgotten trends return with it?

The news made headlines during the summer. The idea of having Serena, Blair and, of course, their outfits lighting up screens again sent everyone into meltdown.

Fashion was an integral part of the show, so it’s no surprise that its costume designer Eric Damon cut his teeth assisting on Sex and the City under the legendary Patricia Field. Damon, who almost didn’t take the job, until the screenplay had him hooked, knew instantly what his references for the two main characters were going to be. In short, Kate Moss for Serena and Audrey Hepburn for Blair.

Naturally, it all started with their school uniforms, the likes of which had never been seen before on any show. Coloured tights, designer accessories, bow ties, waistcoats and diamond-encrusted headbands instantly became must-haves, whether women were still of school-going age or not.

“Initially, when I read it, I was like, ‘We just have these school uniforms. It can’t just be white blouses, pleated skirts and knee socks — we have to do something really incredible and kind of poignant,'” Damon told Fashionista on the show’s 10th anniversary in 2017.

The way that the talented costume designer could distinguish characters – their personalities and their class – despite the fact they were all supposed to be dressed in uniform would set the tone for the wardrobe going forward.

Whether the characters were residents of the brown stone-lined streets of the Upper East Side or from off the beaten track (i.e. still-very-hip Williamsburg), they all had their signature style.

Now that the reboot is officially in the works, could we be about to hop in a veritable time machine back to Constance Billard in 2007? Better bring pack the following if so.
