Your childhood favourite, gingham, is back in a big way

It’s the fabric seen on everyone from the Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy to Kate Middleton – not to mention all of Instagram’s ‘cool girls’. Now it seems that picnic-blanket gingham has a funny way of unifying tastemakers of all kinds.

The 500-year-old cloth variety, instantly recognisable for its woven pattern combining white and one other vibrant colour, has been used in everything from children’s clothes and tablecloths to men’s pocket squares and women’s suits.

Gingham tends to instantly conjure up images of spring and sun-soaked summers. It’s, therefore, no surprise that it popped up in Resort 2019 collections at Jil Sander, Gucci, Temperley London and Altuzarra.

Thanks to fledgling, cult-status brands like Daily Sleeper and Kitri Studio, cutesy gingham dresses have also become the latest fixation to sweep Instagram feeds.

In fact, Kitri’s fuchsia checked Lenora Check Midi Dress received such an enthusiastic reception online, it has sold-out internationally, garnering waitlists in the thousands – further cementing gingham as the pattern of the moment. (Ps. you can still snap up some sizes of the Lenora on BrownThomas.com here).
