Fashion Director’s cut: 5 pairs of boots I want for autumn

A new season means new boots. Fashion director Marie Kelly has her shopping list prepared.

Buying new winter boots is one of my favourite things about autumn. They’re the anchor of my outfits. When I wake in the morning and think about what to wear, I begin with footwear. I decide which boots/shoes/trainers I feels right and I go from there. This year, these are the five pairs I’m most coveting.

I have a tight colour palette in my wardrobe; burgundy, electric blue, forest green and shades of toffee.

They all work comfortably together but I like to mix up how I wear this combination of colours. That’s why these camel knee high boots are on my wish list. I have a similar pair in burgundy and they’ll be pretty much interchangeable.

I have a similar style of boot to this gorgeous pair by Chloé, but they’re looking a little the worse for wear after several years of constant use. This boho style from Net-a-Porter would be the perfect replacement, although I’ll have to check my bank balance first.

I love this style for weekend wear. They have a cool, laid-back look and they’re ideal with denims or dresses.

I wear a lot of cropped trousers as I think they’re a really flattering length, so this style of knitted/sock boot sits seamlessly beneath them. I love the directional heel, as it adds a real point of difference.

Some days, I simply can’t face wearing a heel of any substantial height, nor do I want to wear trainers.

However, I do want the comfort factor that a pair of trainers gives. The answer is a flat, chunky style of boot. They look great with smock dresses and pinafores, as well, of course, as denims.

I almost always have a pair of animal print boots in my sartorial arsenal, but not at the moment, so this pair of snake print lovelies are at the top of my wish list. Office is a store I only browse in occasionally, and rarely find anything I like, but when I go online I seem to find a plethora of footwear I want to buy.
