Have you ever wanted to visit IMMA, but something always seems to get in the way? How about trying out a new hobby, but just don’t seem to have the time? Tonight, cities, towns, and communities will spring to life after dark at the annual Culture Night, with – literally – thousands of free, family-friendly events taking place nationwide. The whole premise is that cultural centres, museums, galleries, theatres, workshops, studios – and everything else culturally drive – open their doors to the public for free for one night ‘so you can experience something totally new, free of change.
The capital city – and indeed even the smallest suburbs around the country – will be buzzing; from poetry slams, free gigs, music lessons, and songs and dance, to arts and crafts, comedy, and more. There are over 4,000 free events taking place nationwide but here is a selection not to be missed if you’re fashion or art-inclined – and don’t forget the camera if you have one!
Damn Fine Print
Where: Unit 1, 32 North Brunswick St, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7
When: 6pm – 10:30pm
One of Dublin’s most popular print studios opens its doors to the public! Swing by and try your hand at pulling your own limited edition print, with live screenprint demos and a chance to see the work of the studio’s print masters. Guests can even bag some Damn Fine wall art from the gallery shop tonight, too.
The Design Tower
Where: Trinity Enterprise and Technology Centre, Pearse St, Junction Grand Canal Quay, D2
When: 5.30pm–9.30pm
Visit the Tower to meet the collective of artists, conservators, jewellers, and makers at work here every day. Enjoy an evening learning, listening and trying your hand at your own unique piece of jewellery overlooking the docklands below.
Costume Design for Photography & Film Workshop
Where: LSAD, Merriman House, Lock Quay, Limerick
When: 5 – 9pm
The Fashion & Textiles for Product and Costume Department of the Limerick School of Art and Design in partnership with Troy Studios will be hosting a drop-in costume design for photography and film workshop for children and adults of all ages.
Gormleys Fine Art
Where: 27 South Frederick St, Dublin 2
When: 4pm – 9pm
‘Silver Linings’ by Gordon Harris opens at Gormley’s Fine Art for the first time tonight. The brand new exhibition consists of a series of oil paintings on board with additional silver leaf and depicts a series of portraits and contemporary still lifes. Irish contemporary artist Gordon Harris is internationally recognized and renowned for his high realism figurative work. The exhibition will feature a range of works differing in size and imagery. The works focus on the theme of youthful playfulness. Harris is a figurative artist with superb technique and a meticulous eye for detail. He infuses a sense of harmony between the natural and conceptual to create works that are provocative and dramatic.
Marlay Craft Courtyard
Where: Marlay Park, Grange Road, Rathfarnham, D16
When: 4pm–11pm
Come along and wander freely through this unique heritage building and meet and chat with artists and craftspeople that have chosen Marlay Craft Courtyard as a base for producing and retailing their craft in one of the finest restored locations in the country. Meet with artists, jewellers, textile designers and many more, who will welcome you and be happy to show you around. There’s also live traditional music from 6-8pm from local musicians which will be a treat.
Bond St Studios
Where: Bondy Street, Dublin 8
When: 4pm – 9pm
Master photographer Barry McCall will showcase an exclusive exhibition for culture night in his Bond Street studio in collaboration with the two other creative studios working at Bond Street. This immersive multimedia show will have a focus on analogue; exploring and celebrating the intricate process behind the pieces, and the sense of tangibility this brings to a work of art. What’s even more special is that it’s completely analogue, so you can put down the screen and get hands on.
Cork Designers Showcase
Where: Floor 16, County Hall
When: 7.30pm – 9pm
This fashion show offers the audience an opportunity to see a selection of beautiful clothes imagined and created by seven Cork designers. The audience will also get a chance to hear their story of how they arrived at this point in their career with a question and answer session at the end of the show. It is an ideal opportunity to meet the maker and an even better opportunity to order a bespoke piece for that special occasion.
Art Deco and Roaring 20’s
Where: Clones Library, Monaghan

Clones Library will transform back to the roaring 1920’s with plenty of swing, jazz music and some daring outfits to celebrate the launch of a special art deco exhibition from the Paul Hankar Institute in Brussels. The ‘Art Deco Expo’ sets out the origins, influences and principles of the Art Deco movement in the early 1900’s and its evolution as a major form of architecture with stunning supporting visuals and motifs. The exhibition will be of particular interest to those interested in architecture, fashion and design. It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with machine age imagery and materials. The style is often characterised by rich colours, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentations.
