Don’t worry, you can still buy “Old Céline”, just not from Hedi Slimane’s Celine

Don’t worry, you can still buy “Old Céline”, just not from Hedi Slimane’s Celine

So it appears from Hedi Slimane’s first collection for Celine that it’s the new Saint Laurent. Is my tone flat enough to infer how massively disappointed I am? I’m not sure women need another brand to deliver the eighties-inspired mini dresses, sequinned tuxedos, leather short suits and XXL-shouldered mini dresses that are the signature of Saint Laurent. No, we need modern, beautifully cut separates that are appropriate for all of the roles we play on any given day, from mentor to mother and everything in-between.

Alas, “Céline” as we knew it is no more. The demand for its aesthetic still exists though, so I’ve put together an edit of brands that offer that same sensibility and cater for women who want form and function from their clothes. However, if you like dressing as if it’s the dawn of a new millennium every day, stick with Celine.

Me+Em

Tailored crepe track pant, €150

This London-based brand offers pretty much everything I want for my wardrobe; languid separates, great tailoring and chic but comfortable dresses. Plus, it’s affordable – Celine-style but without the hefty price tag. The label’s tag line is Intelligent Style, and it really is.

Victoria Beckham

Polo neck, €865; pleated layered skirt, €1,555

She is the undisputed queen of chic separates. From cosy knits and loose-fitting (but not sloppy) pants to outerwear that’s timeless but with a modern point of difference, Victoria Beckham is the thinking woman’s label of choice. She creates pieces that define modern sexiness. A full look will set you back the deposit for a house though (well, not quite but almost!).

Massimo Dutti Limited Edition

100% silk draped dress, €199

Every season, this high street store’s Limited Edition collection excites and delights me. Quality fabrics and modern silhouettes are its signature. I also love that each collection has a lovely mix of both neutral pieces and colourful items, because we all need a bit of both in out wardrobes. Again, the price points is what we call affordable luxury.

Matériel

Double-breasted blazer, €216

This Georgia-based label is my new favourite brand. The pieces are directional and modern but always sophisticated. I love this pale blue blazer as it mixes masculine and feminine perfectly.
