Meet Audrey Hamilton, the artist with a closet as colourful as her eye-catching artwork

Meet Audrey Hamilton, the artist with a closet as colourful as her eye-catching artwork

Pop artist Audrey Hamilton doesn’t shy away from bold, bright statements, both in her day-to-day personal style and in her popular paintings

The Dubliner has amassed a following online thanks to her animal-inspired pieces, her vivid outfits and, most recently, her dreamy Spanish wedding.

And as reports continue to reveal how devastating the Australian fires have been for the country’s wildlife population, Audrey has used her platform to help raise awareness and vital funds. Selling editions of her KOKO koala print and donating a portion of proceeds to the WWF, she has so far raised almost AUS $35,000 for the organisation in mere days.

The 33-year-old creative spoke to Image.ie about her endearing love for tracksuits, why comfy outfits always prevail and the footwear-and-denim combo you’ll never catch her in.

What makes you excited about getting dressed in the morning?

I get excited about going into my studio and working on a piece. I also love the idea of putting outfits together, especially popping a bit of colour into my wardrobe as much as possible. I’m clearly not afraid of colour and also love a good colour clash.

What’s your failsafe, go-to look for a day when you’re lacking inspiration?

I am a big tracksuit lover, even on days when I am inspired. Tracksuits with runners or heels, easy day-to-night look and super comfortable!

Last piece you bought?

…A pair of Adidas tracksuit bottoms!

What’s a typical ‘off-duty’ look for you?

Leggings, a hoodie and runners. I’m all about comfy clothes.

Where do you shop usually?

I try to re-use items in my wardrobe as much as possible. Sometimes when having a good root in your closet you end up finding some really cute pieces you’ve forgotten you had and you can match them with something newer in your wardrobe.

If you have something big coming up, where do you look for a killer outfit?

I actually love looking on Pinterest and seeing if I can put an outfit together from my own wardrobe that’s similar to the outfit I’ve seen online. I do like a bit of online shopping too.

What do you do with your fashion purchases when you no longer need them?

My husband Jack and I do a spring clean of our wardrobes often and donate them. But something else I’ve done a few times is a ‘clothes shop’ with friends. Someone hosts it at their house and each person brings items of clothing they don’t want anymore and swap them with an item someone else has brought. As the saying goes, ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!’

Best ever bargain purchase?

A winter coat I bought years ago from Ralph Lauren in the sales. It is literally the only winter coat I own and wear in the cold!

Designer you’d wear all the time if you won the Lotto?

The Kooples.

Where do you seek style inspiration?

I actually love to people-watch, so I get lots of inspiration from people on the street. I also love a good Pinterest board — and Instagram is always good for outfit ideas.

Trend you’d never be caught dead in?

Flip flops and jeans! Not exactly a trend but I just cannot deal with flip flops and jeans!

Trend you’d wear ‘til the cows come home?

Did I mention I love a good tracksuit?!

One thing that’s been on your wishlist forever?

Probably a Victoria Beckham suit.
