Apparently pedal pushers are back… But I’m sticking with a chic pair of culottes and here’s why

Apparently pedal pushers are back… But I’m sticking with a chic pair of culottes and here’s why

My Instagram feed is peppered with style stars wearing pedal pushers. Remember those? For those of you who don’t, they’re fitted trousers or jeans cut off right above the knee. I owned a pair the first time round in the eighties, so I feel I’ve lived that sartorial dream/nightmare and won’t be going there again.

Instead I’m sticking with a pair of chic culottes – the pedal pusher’s grown-up sister. They’re elegant, comfortable, breathable in summer and work whatever the season or occasion. Culottes are the reliable, dependable sibling of the on-again-off-again pedal pusher. If you’re not yet convinced, pick up a pair in the summer sales, which have just started. Here’s four to try.

I always try to pick up pieces in the sale that will work for autumn also. These Topshop corduroy culottes would look fabulous with a chunky textured knit or polo-neck in September. For now, I’m tempted to buy the jacket too as co-ords are such a cool but easy option in the mornings.

This earthy golden hue always appeals to me as it brings warmth to my pale skin. The piping detail gives these culottes a hit of athlesiure, which I really like.

Khaki is a great neutral and easier to wear than shades of beige because it’s less likely to wash you out (speaking as a pasty person again). Khaki pants are a great alternative to jeans in summer too, as they’re lighter but still have that utilitarian feel.

There’s something lovely about a pair of wool-mix trousers. They always feel very grown-up. At half price, these Cos culottes are a great buy and ideal for autumn too.
