Fashion Director's cut: 5 key buys for September

Fashion director Marie Kelly picks her five key buys for an autumnal (she hopes) September.

I am an oddity in my office. I'm the one who's looking forward to autumn, willing it along almost. But now we're experiencing a bout of unexpected sunshine. Smiling faces surround me at work, but for me this delayed seasonality is more of an interruption than anything else and has interfered with my sartorial schedule; I was hoping to be in lightweight polo necks by the middle of this week, knee-high boots the first week in September and coats by my birthday (the middle of the month). I'm a planner, you see.

I guess the silver lining of the good weather is that it's given me a little longer to curate my beloved September wardrobe. There's so much to covet!

If, like me, you can't wait to wear a chunky knit or pull on a pair of tights, you'll love my edit of pieces to buy now and love for every autumn after.

Buy now, love forever

It's difficult to tell from this image, but this Cos pinafore-style dress is a gorgeous shade of petrol green. I've already bought a lightweight polo neck from Cos in this same hue and I'll be layering one over the other, then punctuating the tonal look with a pair of burgundy knee-high boots. I literally cannot wait to wear this outfit.

Strap dress with drape detail, €125 at Cos

In winter I enjoy feeling cocooned by my clothes; hence my obsession with knitwear and oversized silhouettes.

This Victoria Victoria Beckham sweater is divine and ticks all of my winter wear boxes; the neckline, colour-blocking shades and louche shape.

A blazer adds polish to whatever you put it over. That's my defence for buying so many over the years.

I've never regretted a single blazer buy though. I love the camel and red colour mix of this piece from online retailer Bimba Y Lola.

Oversized check jacket, €295 at

I love this look; it's so chic, but cool. Doesn't this cape coat just make you want to wrap yourself up inside it?

Winter white always looks luxurious and adds a grown-up glamour to every outfit (only real grown-ups can wear white and not get it mucky; I'm not sure I qualify...).

Faux fur cape coat, €395 at Maje

Flared trousers with trainers is one of my go-to looks, and I'll be investing in this camel pair from Zara. I'm always drawn to the same colours every autumn; burgundy, navy, cobalt blue, mustard and camel. These trousers will work perfectly with any number of items in my wardrobe.

I'll wear them with my new white trainers from Atrium.

Flared trousers, €49.95 at Zara
