From disco to dogs of honour: 6 wedding trends that are about to blow up

Here comes the… six things you’re likely going to see at any of the seemingly endless weddings you have already RSVP’d to

Global marketplace Etsy is a melting point of crafts and culture, so when it comes to forecasting trends that are about to take off, the team have unparalleled insight into the zeitgeist.

At the Etsy Wedding Showcase in New York City, in-house Trend Expert Dayna Isom Johnson didn’t need a crystal ball to know what’s already bubbling beneath the surface.

Taking into account what the site has seen a surge of interest in, Johnson threw a curveball when she predicted these following themes for weddings. All things considered? We’re into it. See you on the dance floor!

Groovy Gatherings

Etsy has noticed a spike in searches for disco decor and retro colour palettes: which sound like a welcome change from beige. Searches for 1970s-inspired invitations have increased by 18% — with searches for disco ball items also increasing by almost 20%.

Power Suits

Brides are ditching their big white meringues in favour of sleek pantsuits. Flattering and fashion-forward, suits are a solid alternative for everything from the rehearsal dinner to the ceremony itself.

Non-Traditional Roles

The rule book has well and truly been tossed out the window. Etsy notes a staggering 171% increase in searches for “bridesmen,” proving more brides are asking their close male friends to be at their side on the big day. Similarly, there’s been a 72% boost in queries about “best women.” While we’re on the subject, pet lovers should know that there’s also been a rise in searches for “dogs of honour” …. and isn’t it about time?!

Sustainability

As sustainability continues to rise to the fore, Etsy has seen a 20% increase in searches for vintage and pre-loved wedding rings. Similarly, brides are on the hunt for vintage veils, second-hand cufflinks, and other wedding essentials made from recycled materials.

Wellness Favours

Gone are the days where the bride would send you off for the night with disposable flip flops and a packed of Solpadine. The site notes that couples are instead providing guests with care packages filled with items that promote relaxation and self-care, including crystals. It’s a Goop world; and we’re just living in it!

Co-Ordinated Couples

Who could forget Britney and Justin’s infamous matching denim look at the 2001 American Music Awards? Evidently, no one. Customised wedding denim and leather jackets baring the couples’ names are a massive trend: jumping up 15% in the last three months alone. When one Miss Hailey Baldwin rocked a Hedi Slimane-customised leather jacket ahead of her nuptials to J. Biebz, she likely set fire to this trend too.
