WATCH: 5 of the most infamous Oscar acceptance speeches

WATCH: 5 of the most infamous Oscar acceptance speeches

There’s no doubting that it’s an incredible honour to win an Academy Award; years of work, strife and a million casting calls all resulting in the highest accolade an actor or actress can receive in their profession — the Oscar

We get all that, and sometimes we even look forward to the speeches (even though everyone nominated expects to win and has prepared a thesis in advance). However, at times, it gets hilariously awkward. There are too many tears; someone falls, or they just refuse to leave the stage.

Below are five that everyone remembers (though not for the best reasons) before this year’s ceremony on February 9th.

1. Gwyneth Paltrow (1999)

Not that we want to rain on her parade, but there were so many tears even her mother looked uncomfortable.

2. Angelina Jolie (2000)

Angelina Jolie made everyone feel a tad uncomfortable with this speech after some reported weird events on the red carpet moments before. Just a bit too creepy overall.

3. James Cameron (1998)

Sometimes it’s cool to quote lines from your own movies in your speech, even funny. In this case, it was neither. He deserved the win but it was deemed too ego-centric for most.

4. Sally Field (1985)

This is the speech that’s infamous for Field shouting, “You like me, you really like me!” except that she was misquoted. What she actually said was, “You like me, right now, you like me,” but still, the misplaced hysteria remains. She remains a total legend, and we all really do like her.

5. Marlon Brando (1972)

We admire the cause taken up by Brando and the Oscars are undoubtedly the forum with which he would be able to reach the most ears. This speech was memorable because rather than inspiring the better treatment of American Indians by the film industry, people mostly remembered the not nice people who booed during the speech.
