Some food was conceived to please. The latest of the breed are tacos, a California/Mexican dish of meat wrapped in a soft shell has become the hottest comfort food trend from the west coast of America right over to the food trucks in London’s East End? and now Dublin.

Don’t let the casual ??taco joint? pundit fool you though – Taco Taco on XXX street is the latest offering from the guys who brought you Brunch of Champions at San Lorenzo, and it means business. This is serious food.

The space is cool – underneath Odessa Club, looking out onto XXX you’re pretty much transported from Dublin city centre to some cool, backstreet eateries that could be Brooklyn. Inside, the music is a mix of Fleetwood Mac and Jay Z, and the decor is simple; comfy booths, mosaic tiles and a dimly lit, cosy room.

The food is delicious: battered fish tacos, smothered in salsa and mayo, helium tacos with XXXX and sides like guacamole with chips, sweet potato fries and XX are all fresh, light. On first look, the menus price list might give you a shock, but when the food and drinks come out, you’ll know what you’re understand what you’re paying for; mega portions and shareable fare. Nothing is skimped on and the service is friendly, attentive but laid back.

Don’t leave without a Margarita – ‘sharp and served in heavy-weight glass, it’s those small touches that make this such a treat place to dine out in.

The crowd here are a healthy mix of couples, work mates, girl groups and lads in need of a feed, and service is friendly, attentive but laid back.

All in all? We want to make our way though the menu from start to finish. We didn’t have room for the xxx, which was so good that the couple next to us didn’t speak once while devouring it.

The restaurant, homed next to the Odessa Club, is a small space, dimly lit with a great playlist – think Jay Z to Fleetwood Mac and everything in between. We rocked on in at 6pm and there was already a good crowd, including a couple so engrossed in their dessert they didn’t even notice us sit down. It was a supremely good looking Salt caramel popcorn with peanut butter ice-cream, FYI.

 

The food? Well, it’s delicious. Battered tempura tacos smothered in green onion salsa and hot sauce, Halloumi tacos with beetroot slaw, cashew nuts and hummus and sides like guacamole with chips, sweet potato fries and Poutine fries with smokey bacon, black pepper sauce and mozzarella are all fresh, light and get-your-hands-dirty kind of fare. At first glance the menus is a little pricey, but once the food and drinks come out you’ll understand what you’re paying for; mega portions and impeccable ingredients.

Margaritas are king here. Warning: one is not enough. We had to have a talk with ourselves after our fifth, otherwise things could’ve gotten messy.

All in all? We want to make our way though the menu from start to finish here. We didn’t have room for dessert but that’s what next time is for, right?
