Our Oscars Predictions

While Benedict Cumberbatch’s photobombing efforts and Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s hilarious monologue at the Golden Globes are still causing us to let out a little giggle every few hours, award season in Hollywood keeps rolling on. Tomorrow we’ll find out who and what are nominated for an Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards.

We don’t claim to be cinema aficionados but we’d like to think we could make an educated guess as to who the nominees will be. Picking a winner is a much more difficult task but sure we’ll give it a shot.

Best Picture:
Boyhood
The Imitation Game
Birdman
The Theory of Everything
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Winner: Boyhood. It took away the big prize at the Golden Globes on Sunday and we don’t see the Academy’s opinion being any different. Linklater has created a masterpiece, a film the likes of which we may never seen again. Filmed over a period of 12 years, Boyhood chronicles the life of 6 year old Mason Evans Jnr. As he grows up and learns plenty along the way.

Best Director:
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Alejandro Gonz?lez I??rritu, Birdman
Clint Eastwood, American Sniper
Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
James Marsh The Imitation Game

Winner: Richard Linklater. Boyhood will probably never be replicated and for that reason, Linklater should be nailed on to take home the golden statue.

Best Actor:
Michael Keaton, Birdman
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
Ralph Fiennes, Grand Budapest Hotel
Eddie Redmayne, The Theory Of Everything
David Oyelowo, Selma

Winner: Ralph Fiennes gave the performance of his career in Grand Budapest Hotel. It was our favourite film of 2014 and Fiennes was simply superb throughout.

Best Actress:
Julianne Moore, Still Alice
Reese Witherspoon, Wild
Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything
Jennifer Aniston, Cake

Winner: Julianne Moore took home the prize for best actress in a drama at the Golden Globes on Sunday and we fully expect her to make it a double for her role as a woman suffering from Alzheimers in Still Alice.

Best Supporting Actor:
J.K. Simmons, Whiplash
Edward Norton, Birdman
Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
Steve Carell, Foxcatcher

Winner: JK Simmons is one of the most respected and most liked actors in all of Hollywood. Having played some brilliant parts over the years, Whiplash saw Simmons finally be given the perfect role as a teacher who pushes his student further than he ever thought possible. It would be thoroughly deserved.

Best Supporting Actress:
Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Emma Stone, Birdman
Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game
Meryl Streep, Into The Woods
Rene Russo, Nightcrawler

Winner: Patricia Arquette, who revealed was paid less for Boyhood than she pays her own dog-walker is a pretty good bet to take home the prize on the night. She was consistently brilliant throughout Boyhood, which is an impressive feat considering it was filmed over twelve years.

Winner: The?Lego Movie was quite possibly the funniest film of 2014. A flawless storyline that both kids and adults could relate to in different ways. And who could forget the side-splittingly hilarious ‘SPACESHIP’ scene? Place your bets now.

Best Original Song:
Yellow Flicker Beat – Lorde (The Hunger Games)
Everything Is Awesome – Tegan & Sara (The LEGO Movie)
Glory – John Legend (Selma)
Mercy Is – Patti Smith (Noah)
Big Eyes – Lana Del Rey (Big Eyes)

Winner: While John Legend took home the prize at the Golden Globes for Glory, we’re not so sure that he’ll repeat the feat at the Oscars. Our favourite would be the incredibly catchy Everything Is Awesome from The Lego Movie. Why? ‘Cause it’s awesome!
