Obama And Family Request Screening Of Irish Movie On Holidays

WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 04: U.S. President Barack Obama (R), accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, gives remarks to members of the military and White House staff who were invited to the South Lawn of the White House on July 4, 2015 in Washington, DC. The guests were treated to a Bruno Mars concert and the traditional fireworks on the National Mall. An earlier Bar-B-Que had been planned but was cancelled due to inclement weather. Well, this is cool news. Turns out Barack Obama and his family are planning to watch an Irish movie during their holidays. Moneygall = not just a flash in the diplomatic pan.

Page Six reports the First Family have requested for a copy of Jimmy’s Hall, an 2014 Irish movie, to watch during their holiday in Martha’s Vineyard later this month. While the choice of the tale of James Gralton, an Irishman who set up a dance hall in rural Leitrim and was deported from this country in 1933 for his political beliefs, seems a little bit serious for a family holiday, we’re pretty chuffed that one of the most famous families in the world wants to learn more about the history of our island.

Also, it’s not like you’d expect the Obamas to kick back with the popcorn to watch White House Down. As much as we all love The Channing Tatum, sometimes it just wouldn’t be the best example to set. And, by choosing an indie drama from Ken Loach, the Obamas are bringing a lot of attention to a gem of a movie. Now all we need to do is have movie star and voracious reader Reese Witherspoon tweet about reading a load of contemporary Irish writers and our cultural output will start bringing in some dollars along with the constant acclaim.

Did you miss Jimmy’s Hall in the cinema last year? Make sure to catch it on Netflix, where it’s streaming these past few weeks. Here’s the trailer to get you in a presidential mood.
