Last night Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres broke Twitter with a selfie that included Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong?o, Meryl Streep and Bradley Cooper. It is now the most retweeted photo in Twitter’s history – heading towards 2.5 million – and such was its wildfire popularity the social network went down for about twenty minutes during the ceremony. Brava Ellen, brava. And also kudos to the Tom Ford-clad Bradley Cooper who took the photo and helped make very modern history. In other celebrity shenanigans Benedict Cumberbatch photobombed U2. Well played, Sherlock.

We’ve pieced together a gallery of some of our favourite backstage snaps from the night above.
