Viola Davis, Amy Schumer, Uzo Adubo, Frances McDormand, Allison Janney and more win top categories at the 2015 Emmys…?
If you’re not watching Game of Thrones by now, you’re probably feeling pretty left out of the conversation; try a weekend in Dubrovnik, where much of the hit show is filmed, and guided tours are ten-a-penny, to feel as clueless as this writer. The HBO show has enjoyed stratospheric levels of success since arriving on our screens some years ago and, surprising to nobody, they cleaned up at last night’s much-anticipated TV Emmys. Breaking records, GOT became the first show to receive as many awards in one year. 12 awards out of 24 nominations is pretty impressive for one show alone, while the much-loved network, HBO, stacked up an incredible 43 Emmys in total. Meanwhile, it was an incredible night for women in TV. Another milestone was marked when Viola Davis became the first African-American woman to take home the award for actress in a lead role, for her work on How To Get Away With Murder. In an inspiring acceptance speech the Oscar-winning actress shared an important quote from civil rights activist Harriet Tubman: ?The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity.” Davis continued, ?You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.?

Other talented women to take home awards included Orange is the New Black‘s Uzo Adubo who famously was just about to hang up the towel on acting when she got the call for her role as Crazy Eyes, and our girl Amy Schumer who reigned supreme in the outstanding variety sketch series category.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus proved her staying power in the world of comedy when accepting the best actress in a comedy gong for Veep.
