Angelina Jolie Turns Professor In London

Angelina Jolie Turns Professor In London

She’s an actress, director and humanitarian and now the ever-inspiring Angelina Jolie will take on a new role; a visiting professor at the London School of Economics (LSC). As one of four new visiting professors, she will teach a master’s course detailing the impact of war on women.

From 2017, Jolie will join the former foreign secretary William Hague as a ?professor in practice? as part of a new MSc course on women, peace and security, which LSE says is the first of its kind in the world.

The move from the activist, who is currently the?UNHCR’s Special Envoy, shouldn’t come as a surprise as the topic is one which Jolie is hugely passionate about; she launched The Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative in 2012 alongside Hague to raise awareness of sexual violence, end the culture of impunity, and ensure survivors are better supported, and also co-chaired the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in 2014, where world leaders discussed practical steps to tackle the use of rape as a weapon of war. She then channelled?her knowledge into a film; sexual violence in conflict was also the subject of Jolie’s directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which detailed the mass sexual assaults against women that occurred during 1992-1995 Bosnian war.

Hague also revealed last year that it was Jolie who encouraged him to step down from his role in government to join her in the crusade against preventing sexual violence in conflict.

She told The Guardian that she was very encouraged by the creation of the course, and hoped other universities would follow suit. ?It is vital we broaden the discussion on how to advance women’s rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict. I am looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students, as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations,? she said.?As well as delivering guest lectures to students in the autumn of 2016, Jolie will be running workshops, public events, and carrying out her own research.

The one-year course will commence this September and will see Jolie and Hague teach at least once a year,?”as often as their schedules, and their commitment as agreed with the centre director will allow”, according to a statement.

This new role will no doubt see the versatile?public figure continue to inspire many as she uses her place in the limelight to champion such a worthy case.
