While lavish series The Crown chronicled the adult life of Queen Elizabeth II (played to a tee with an award-winning performance by Claire Foy), from her 1947 marriage onwards, the new series trailer, promises to introduce some of the more interesting threads of the Monarch to?light. ?While season one focused on Elizabeth’s life as she was forced to take the throne after the sudden’death of her father, King George VI in 1952 and the early beginnings of her marriage to Prince Phillip, the next season begins 10 years later.
The Queen will be at the heart of the story, as will the often tempestuous marriage between the pair as the sixties begins. Details of the upcoming season have largely been kept under wraps, but Foy shared a little to?The Hollywood Reporter: “This is a story of a marriage very much in the second series, and how they navigate that. They’ve been together for ten years, they’ve had two children and it’s about going and assessing the situation. It’s not going to be a rose tinted view of marriage.”
We’ll also get a glimpse of the romance between the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon, who was Antony Armstrong-Jones. Snowden passed away earlier this year and was said to have had an “extraordinarily complex love life” with his affairs known both before and after his marriage to the princess in 1960.?Snowdon was the first commoner in four centuries to marry a British monarch’s daughter and is ?everything the palace isn’t: seductive, dangerous, risque,” according to?Peter Morgan, writer of The Crown.
The initial glimpse of the second series certainly looks intriguing. Watch it below and catch up with season one before the series premieres on December 8th on Netflix:
