TV fans are in for a treat this year; 2017 is going to be all about the girls. Or specifically, complicated, empowering women set to dominate the small screen. Given the gender disparity that currently exists for actresses at the moment, it is promising to note the reel of upcoming projects,?from The Handmaid’s Tale to The Good Fight and anticipated Netflix’series Girl Boss; this year sees women (finally) take centre stage. In honour of International Women’s Day, scroll for the women we love (and can’t wait to see) on screen in the coming weeks.
Sharon Horgan In Catastrophe
The always brilliant Sharon Horgan is back in series three of the always witty snd painfully real?(and critically-acclaimed, FYI) series Catastrophe, which sees herself and paranoid husband Rob try and navigate family life. Each episode is fresh, hilarious and always relevant; the entire cast shines but we always give Horgan an extra fist-pump – she’s doing incredible things for women on screen. Catastrophe airs on Channel 4 every Monday night at 10pm.
The Cast Of Big Little Lies
First and foremost, Big Little Lies has a stellar cast: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and?Shailene Woodley – all actresses of incredible calibre – take leading roles for the HBO limited series based on Liane Moriarty’s best-selling 2014 novel of the same name. The plot revolves around three mothers living seemingly perfect lives?until a dark turn of murder leads to everything unravelling. ?This one is due to air on Sky Atlantic?next week, on March 13th. Set your recorders; if the hype is anything to go by, this is going so, so good.
Britt Robertson In Girl Boss
Netflix series GirlBoss?- yes, we also are sick of the term – is based on Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso’s best-selling autobiography, due to premiere on Netflix on April 24th. The series will chronicles the rise of the “Cinderella of Tech” as an Ebay online clothing store was transformed into a multi-million business. Britt Robertson plays misfit?Sophia who struggles to cope with life and business in the spotlight.
Elisabeth Moss In The Handmaid’s Tale
Elisabeth Moss takes the lead as Offred, a Handmaid, the literal property of a high-ranking ?commander,? who must forcibly bear him children in a world of terrifying oppression. The anticipated series is based on Margaret Atwood’s renowned dystopia The Handmaid’s Tale and is due to premiere on Hulu (you’ll be able to stream it online) on April 26th.
Jessica Findlay Brown In Harlots
Harlots tells the story of?Charlotte Wells, 18th-century London’s most coveted courtesan, but what makes this major TV series differ is that has?an entirely female team of directors, writers and executive producers who have promised a period drama from an entirely female gaze. With a cast ranging from Downton Abby’s Jessica Findlay Brown, Samantha Morton and Lesley Manville, this one looks highly intriguing. Due to premiere on March 29th on ITV.
Christine Baranski In The Good Fight
This Good Wife spin-off series picks up one year Diane Lockheart (played by the underrated and always brilliant Christine Baranski) decided to part ways with the Florricks and is poised to enter retirement. However, life sees her take another path thanks to a scheme that seeks to destroy both her reputation?and that of her goddaughter (played by Game of Thrones‘ Rose Leslie).?It’s set to air on More4 this Spring.
